Lead Sustainability Project Officer

Job Reference: Ref/17965/4892
Contract Type: Full Time
Contract Details: Permanent
Salary: £48474
About the Role
The Sustainability division within the Economic Growth & Sustainability team is dedicated to fostering sustainable economic development and addressing climate change challenges. This team engages in various initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable practices, including business support, external funding acquisition, and infrastructure development for digital and electric vehicles.
A significant aspect of this role involves securing external funding. The team is tasked with identifying potential funding opportunities, crafting compelling business cases, and submitting bids to obtain financial resources that will enhance economic growth and regeneration efforts. This requires a strategic approach to both competitive bidding and the effective management of allocated funds.
The North Northamptonshire area has successfully secured over £6 million through various funding programs aimed at supporting local businesses and communities. The team plays a crucial role in demonstrating stakeholder engagement and garnering political support to prioritize interventions that align with funding objectives. This funding supports initiatives across three key areas: business development, community enhancement, and skills training, with a particular emphasis on assisting local enterprises in their decarbonization efforts.
The Council has also been provisionally awarded up to £5 million for cultural investment, pending the submission of an Investment Plan. This funding will facilitate capital projects that contribute to the region's cultural landscape.
Business support initiatives include conducting site visits and consultations to identify challenges faced by local enterprises. The team employs a triage system to connect businesses with specialized assistance, reinforced by the re-establishment of the North Northamptonshire Business Forum, which unites key public sector organizations and business networks.
As the region experiences housing growth, attracting new businesses is essential to accommodate the increasing population and mitigate out-commuting. Recent inquiries handled by the team highlight the area's potential for economic development.
The team collaborates with various stakeholders, including the Department for Work & Pensions and local educational institutions, to organize job fairs that connect job seekers with local employers and training opportunities.
The Digital Infrastructure program is another vital component of the team's work, aimed at enhancing digital connectivity across the region. This initiative has significantly improved full-fibre coverage, benefiting numerous communities.
The team is also responsible for managing Section 106 planning obligations, ensuring that infrastructure development meets the demands of growth while considering climate change implications.
A key responsibility of this role is to lead the Council's strategic initiatives on climate change. This includes the development of the Carbon Management Plan and the Climate Change Strategy, with a commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. Activities include organizing annual conferences to share best practices and managing various projects that support climate goals.
Key Responsibilities
1. Advocate for sustainability across North Northamptonshire by contributing to the Climate Change Strategy and Carbon Management Plan.
2. Collaborate with various departments to identify and implement innovative sustainability projects.
3. Monitor and report on the progress of the Carbon Management Plan and related initiatives.
4. Develop and execute projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions.
5. Evaluate business cases and provide guidance on applications for the Climate Change Investment Fund.
6. Engage with stakeholders to promote collaboration on sustainability initiatives and establish the Council's Zero Carbon Working Group.
7. Seek external funding opportunities to support sustainability projects and progress related initiatives.
8. Analyze new legislation and policy developments to inform the Council's sustainability approach.
About You
Candidates should possess a Level 4 qualification (Degree or equivalent) in sustainability, environmental management, or a related field, or have equivalent experience in a relevant discipline. Proven experience in a sustainability role, particularly in climate change strategies, is essential.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to build effective relationships with a diverse range of partners and stakeholders. Strong skills in collecting, analyzing, and presenting complex information clearly are crucial, along with proficiency in communication and report writing.
