About the Role

The Sustainability division operates within the Economic Growth & Sustainability team, which undertakes a variety of initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable economic development and addressing climate change challenges. Key activities include attracting investment, providing business assistance, managing external funding, and overseeing digital and electric vehicle infrastructure.

A significant aspect of this role involves securing external funding. The team is tasked with identifying potential funding opportunities, crafting compelling business cases, and submitting proposals to facilitate economic development and regeneration. This process requires a strategic approach to ensure that resources are effectively allocated to achieve optimal outcomes.

The team has successfully secured over £6 million through various funding streams, including the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Rural England Prosperity Fund. A crucial part of this success was engaging stakeholders to prioritize interventions that would receive support, alongside garnering political backing.

The funding supports diverse initiatives focused on three main themes: business development, community enhancement, and skills training. A particular emphasis is placed on assisting local businesses in their decarbonization efforts through workshops, assessments, and financial support for energy efficiency improvements.

The Council has also been provisionally awarded up to £5 million through the Levelling Up for Culture Priority Places programme, pending the submission of an Investment Plan.

The team actively engages with local businesses through site visits and meetings to identify challenges and provide guidance. This is facilitated by the North Northants Business Forum, which unites key public sector organizations and business networks.

With ongoing housing growth in the area, attracting new businesses is essential to support the increasing population and minimize out-commuting. Recent inquiries handled by the team include significant investments from various companies, contributing to job creation and economic vitality.

The team also coordinates Jobs and Careers Fairs in collaboration with local partners, aimed at connecting job seekers with employment opportunities and enhancing skills development.

Additionally, the team manages a Digital Infrastructure program to enhance connectivity across the region, working in partnership with other councils to improve digital access.

A vital responsibility of this role is leading the Council's strategic approach to climate change, which includes the development of a Carbon Management Plan and a comprehensive Climate Change Strategy. The Council has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, with various initiatives in place to support this goal.

Key Responsibilities

1. Promote sustainability across North Northants by contributing to the development and execution of a Climate Change Strategy and Carbon Management Plan.
2. Collaborate with various departments to identify and implement innovative projects aimed at reducing the Council's carbon footprint.
3. Monitor and report on the progress of the Carbon Management Plan and related initiatives.
4. Develop and execute projects that facilitate carbon reduction efforts.
5. Evaluate business cases and provide guidance on applications to the Climate Change Investment Fund.
6. Engage with stakeholders, including local businesses, to support the Council's sustainability objectives and establish a Zero Carbon Working Group.
7. Seek external funding opportunities to advance carbon reduction projects and related initiatives.
8. Analyze new legislation and policies to produce informative reports and documents that guide the Council's sustainability efforts.

About You

Candidates should possess a Level 4 qualification (Degree or equivalent) in sustainability, environmental management, or a related field, or have equivalent experience in a relevant discipline.

We seek individuals with a proven track record in sustainability roles, particularly with expertise in climate change strategies. Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to communicate complex information clearly are essential.
