About the Role
The Sustainability division operates within the Economic Growth & Sustainability team, focusing on a wide range of initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable economic development and addressing climate change challenges. Key responsibilities include securing external funding, managing business support programs, and enhancing digital and electric vehicle infrastructure.
The team plays a vital role in identifying funding opportunities and developing compelling business cases to support economic regeneration. This includes both competitive bidding and managing allocated funds to ensure optimal resource utilization for improved outcomes. The team has successfully secured significant funding through various programs aimed at supporting local businesses in their decarbonization efforts.
Recent achievements include the allocation of over £6m through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Rural England Prosperity Fund, demonstrating the team's capability in stakeholder engagement and political advocacy.
The team also engages in business support activities, including site visits and consultations to address challenges faced by local enterprises. Collaboration with key partners such as local chambers of commerce and business networks is essential for fostering a supportive business environment.
In light of the region's housing growth, attracting new businesses is crucial to accommodate the increasing population and reduce out-commuting. The team has successfully handled inquiries from major corporations looking to establish operations in the area, contributing to job creation and economic vitality.
The team manages a Digital Infrastructure program, enhancing digital connectivity across the region, and collaborates with various stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of infrastructure projects.
A significant aspect of this role involves leading the Council's strategic initiatives on climate change, including the development of a Carbon Management Plan and a comprehensive Climate Change Strategy. The Council is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, and this role will be pivotal in driving related initiatives and managing funding for climate-related projects.
Key Responsibilities
1. Advocate for sustainability across North Northamptonshire by contributing to the development and execution of the Climate Change Strategy and Carbon Management Plan.
2. Collaborate with various departments to identify and implement innovative projects aimed at reducing the Council's carbon footprint.
3. Monitor and report on the progress of the Carbon Management Plan and associated sustainability initiatives.
4. Develop and execute projects that facilitate carbon reduction efforts.
5. Evaluate business cases and provide guidance on applications for the Climate Change Investment Fund.
6. Engage with internal and external stakeholders to promote the Council's sustainability objectives and establish a Zero Carbon Working Group.
7. Seek external funding opportunities to support sustainability projects and progress related initiatives.
8. Analyze new legislation and policy developments to produce informative reports and policy documents that guide the Council's sustainability approach.
About You
Candidates should possess a Level 4 qualification (Degree or equivalent) in sustainability, environmental management, or a related field, or have equivalent experience in a relevant discipline. Proven experience in a sustainability role or related area, with expertise in climate change strategies, is essential.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to build effective relationships with a diverse range of partners and stakeholders. Strong skills in collecting, analyzing, and presenting complex information clearly are crucial, along with proficiency in communication and report writing.
