Lead Sustainability Project Officer
Job Reference: Ref/17965/4892
Contract Type: Full Time
Contract Details: Permanent
Salary: £48474
Role Overview
The Sustainability division within the Economic Growth & Sustainability team is dedicated to fostering sustainable economic development and addressing climate change challenges. This encompasses a variety of functions including investment attraction, business assistance, funding acquisition, and management of digital and electric vehicle infrastructure.
A significant aspect of our work involves securing external funding. The team is tasked with identifying potential funding opportunities, crafting compelling business cases, and submitting proposals to facilitate economic growth and regeneration. This requires a strategic approach to both competitive bidding and the management of pre-allocated funding.
Notably, North Northants has successfully secured over £6m through various funding streams, including the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Rural England Prosperity Fund. The team's success hinges on effective stakeholder engagement and demonstrating political backing for prioritized interventions. The funding supports diverse initiatives focused on business development, community enhancement, and skills training, with a strong emphasis on assisting local businesses in their decarbonization efforts.
The Council has also been provisionally awarded up to £5m through a cultural investment program, pending the submission of an Investment Plan. This funding is earmarked for capital projects, and the team is actively engaged in preparations to secure this investment.
Our business support initiatives involve direct engagement with local enterprises to identify challenges and connect them with specialized resources. The reactivation of the North Northants Business Forum has been instrumental in fostering collaboration among public sector organizations and local business networks.
As the region experiences significant housing growth, attracting new businesses is crucial to support the increasing population and mitigate out-commuting. Recent inquiries handled by the team highlight our commitment to fostering a vibrant economic landscape.
The team also coordinates Jobs and Careers Fairs in collaboration with local partners, providing valuable opportunities for community members to explore employment, entrepreneurship, and skill development.
Additionally, we manage a Digital Infrastructure program aimed at enhancing connectivity across Northamptonshire, ensuring that the region remains competitive in the digital age.
A key responsibility of this role is to lead the Council's strategic initiatives on climate change. This includes overseeing the Carbon Management Plan and developing a comprehensive Climate Change Strategy. The Council has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, and the role involves organizing events to promote sustainability initiatives and managing a dedicated Climate Change Investment Fund.
Key Responsibilities
The primary duties of this position include:
1. Advocate for sustainability across North Northants by contributing to the development and execution of the Climate Change Strategy and Carbon Management Plan.
2. Collaborate with various departments to identify and implement innovative projects aimed at reducing the Council's carbon footprint.
3. Monitor and report on the progress of the Carbon Management Plan and related initiatives.
4. Develop and execute projects that facilitate carbon reduction.
5. Evaluate business cases and provide guidance on applications for the Climate Change Investment Fund.
6. Engage with stakeholders, including local businesses, to promote the Council's climate change objectives and establish a Zero Carbon Working Group.
7. Seek external funding opportunities to support climate-related projects and advance related initiatives.
8. Analyze new legislation and policy developments to produce informative reports and policy documents that guide the Council's sustainability efforts.
Candidate Profile
Applicants should possess a Level 4 qualification (Degree or equivalent) in sustainability, environmental management, or a related field, or have equivalent experience in a relevant discipline.
We seek individuals with a proven track record in sustainability roles, demonstrating expertise in climate change strategies. The ability to foster collaborative relationships with diverse partners and stakeholders is essential.
Strong skills in data collection, analysis, and clear communication are vital for success in this role.
Benefits
We offer:
- a competitive salary
- a pension scheme with significant employer contributions
- opportunities for professional development within a large unitary council
- generous leave entitlements and flexible working arrangements
We are a new unitary council committed to driving sustainable growth and addressing climate change challenges.
