Lead Sustainability Project Officer
Job Reference: Ref/17965/4892
Contract Type: Full Time
Contract Details: Permanent
Salary: £48474
About the Role
The Sustainability division operates within the Economic Growth & Sustainability team, focusing on various initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable economic development and addressing climate change challenges. This encompasses activities such as business support, external funding acquisition, digital infrastructure enhancement, and managing environmental contributions on behalf of the Council.
A significant aspect of this role involves securing external funding. The team is tasked with identifying potential funding opportunities, crafting compelling business cases, and submitting bids to obtain financial resources that promote economic development and revitalization. This requires a strategic approach to navigate competitive bidding processes and ensure that allocated funds are effectively utilized to achieve desired outcomes.
The Council has successfully secured over £6 million through various funding streams, including the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Rural England Prosperity Fund. This success is attributed to the team's ability to engage stakeholders and demonstrate the necessity of targeted interventions. The funding supports diverse initiatives across three key areas: business development, community enhancement, and skills training, with a particular emphasis on assisting local enterprises in their decarbonization efforts.
The role also includes overseeing business support activities, which involve direct engagement with local enterprises to identify challenges and facilitate access to specialized assistance. The re-establishment of the North Northants Business Forum has been instrumental in fostering collaboration among public sector organizations and local business networks.
As the region experiences significant housing growth, attracting new businesses is essential to accommodate the increasing population and mitigate out-commuting. Recent inquiries handled by the team reflect this focus on inward investment.
The team is also responsible for organizing Jobs and Careers Fairs in collaboration with various partners, aimed at connecting job seekers with local employment opportunities and enhancing skills development.
In addition, the team manages a Digital Infrastructure program, enhancing digital connectivity across the region and ensuring that communities benefit from improved access to technology.
A critical aspect of this position is leading the Council's strategic initiatives related to climate change. This includes the development of a comprehensive Climate Change Strategy and Carbon Management Plan, with the objective of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. The role involves organizing conferences to share best practices, managing a Climate Change Investment Fund, and ensuring that all Council activities align with sustainability goals.
Key Responsibilities
1. Advocate for sustainability initiatives throughout North Northants by contributing to the Climate Change Strategy and Carbon Management Plan.
2. Collaborate with various departments to identify and implement innovative projects aimed at reducing the Council's environmental impact.
3. Monitor and report on the progress of the Carbon Management Plan and related activities.
4. Develop and execute projects that facilitate carbon reduction efforts.
5. Evaluate business cases and provide guidance on applications for the Climate Change Investment Fund.
6. Engage with stakeholders, including local businesses, to promote the Council's sustainability objectives and establish a Zero Carbon Working Group.
7. Seek external funding opportunities to support climate-related projects and initiatives.
8. Analyze new legislation and policies to produce informative reports and guidance documents that shape the Council's sustainability approach.
About You
Candidates should possess a Level 4 qualification (Degree or equivalent) in sustainability, environmental management, or a related field, or have equivalent experience in a relevant discipline. Proven experience in a sustainability role or related area, with expertise in climate change strategies, is essential.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to build effective partnerships and collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders. Strong skills in data collection, analysis, and clear communication are crucial for success in this role.
Our Benefits
We offer:
- a competitive salary
- a pension scheme with significant employer contributions, including life cover and ill-health protection.
- opportunities for professional development within a large unitary council.
- generous leave entitlement (28 days, increasing to 33 days) plus bank holidays, with the option to purchase additional leave.
- flexible working arrangements to support a healthy work-life balance.
