Role Overview

The Sustainability division operates within the Economic Growth & Sustainability team, dedicated to fostering sustainable economic development and addressing climate change challenges. Key responsibilities encompass securing funding, managing programs, and enhancing digital and green infrastructure to benefit the community.

The team plays a vital role in identifying funding opportunities and crafting compelling business cases to support economic regeneration. This involves competitive bidding and the submission of investment plans to access allocated resources effectively.

Recent achievements include securing over £6m through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Rural England Prosperity Fund, demonstrating strong stakeholder engagement and political backing. The funding supports initiatives across three primary themes: business, community, and skills development, with a focus on assisting local businesses in their decarbonization efforts.

The Council has also been provisionally awarded up to £5m through the Levelling Up for Culture Priority Places programme, aimed at capital investment, with ongoing efforts to finalize the investment plan.

The team engages in business support activities, conducting site visits and collaborating with local enterprises to identify challenges and facilitate access to specialized assistance. The re-establishment of the North Northants Business Forum has been instrumental in fostering connections among public sector organizations and local business networks.

With the region poised for housing growth, attracting new businesses is essential to accommodate the increasing population and minimize out-commuting. Recent inquiries have included major companies expanding their operations in the area, contributing to job creation and economic vitality.

The team also manages a Digital Infrastructure program, enhancing digital connectivity across Northamptonshire, which has significantly improved full-fibre coverage in the region.

An essential aspect of this role involves leading the Council's strategic approach to climate change, including the development of the Carbon Management Plan and a comprehensive Climate Change Strategy. The Council is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, with initiatives such as an annual Climate Change Conference and a dedicated Climate Change Investment Fund.

Key Responsibilities

1. Promote sustainability initiatives throughout North Northants by contributing to the Climate Change Strategy and Carbon Management Plan.
2. Collaborate with various departments to identify and implement innovative projects aimed at reducing the Council's carbon footprint.
3. Monitor and report on the progress of the Carbon Management Plan and related activities.
4. Develop and execute projects that facilitate carbon reduction efforts.
5. Evaluate business cases and provide guidance on applications for the Climate Change Investment Fund.
6. Engage with stakeholders, including local businesses, to support the Council's sustainability objectives and establish the Zero Carbon Working Group.
7. Seek external funding opportunities to advance climate change projects and related initiatives.
8. Analyze new legislation and policy developments to create informative reports and policy documents that guide the Council's sustainability efforts.

Candidate Profile

Applicants should possess a Level 4 qualification (Degree or equivalent) in sustainability, environmental management, or a related field, or have equivalent experience in a relevant discipline.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in sustainability roles, demonstrating expertise in climate change strategies and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse partners. Strong communication skills and the ability to present complex information clearly are essential.
