Role Overview

This position is ideal for candidates with an engineering background—whether electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or a combination—who are eager to advance their careers in the rail sector. Comprehensive rail-specific training will be provided to the successful candidate. A company vehicle and fuel card will be available for job-related use. Candidates should possess a keen attention to detail, the ability to work independently or collaboratively, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Some overnight travel may be required. Key Responsibilities

Your primary duties will include:

  • Safely fitting, operating, and maintaining on-track machines (OTM) in compliance with the Competency Based Standards for Fitters, Operators, and Maintainers, as well as the Colas Rail Railway Safety Case. Comprehensive training will be provided.
  • Weekend, holiday, and night shifts will be part of the work schedule, with some travel required (arrangements will be made by the company).
  • Employment is contingent upon passing relevant Railway Standard Medicals; a detailed job description will be provided during the interview.

Principal Duties

  • Ensure timely and accurate logging of duty hours as directed by the duty manager or senior production manager.
  • Utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) as provided.
  • Maintain open and effective communication, both verbal and written, with the Rail Plant Control Room and Help Desk.
  • Adhere to safety and competency standards.
  • Absorb and retain knowledge acquired through training.
  • Execute emergency procedures as necessary.

OTM Operations

  • Receive full training on OTM operations.
  • Address and report service faults and failures promptly to the Rail Plant Control Desk.
  • Operate on-track machines in accordance with Railway Standards.
  • Conduct maintenance and safety checks, assisting specialist fitter staff with machine breakdowns.

Fitting Responsibilities

  • Support specialist fitter staff in all maintenance tasks.
  • Immediately report machine faults and failures to the Rugby Rail Plant Control Desk.
  • Complete all maintenance duties as outlined in the Maintenance Fitter Assessment Scheme.
Candidate Profile
  • Proficient in computer and phone skills, including Windows, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Exhibit flexibility, honesty, and punctuality.
  • Possess a Level 3 NVQ or equivalent in Vehicle, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills.
  • Hold a clean, valid road vehicle driving license for company vehicle operation.
  • Be willing to engage in ongoing learning and training.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and professional pride.
  • Able to work weekends and night shifts.
  • Possess a mechanical aptitude.
  • Be a collaborative team player.
  • Exhibit good computer and phone skills.
