Rail Services Rostering Supervisor

Reporting to: Performance and Policy Manager
Purpose of the Role
- To oversee a team of Freight Resource Planners, ensuring optimal resource allocation and timely issuance of rosters to deliver all freight services safely and efficiently.
- Resource allocation will adhere to company terms, rostering guidelines, and customer requirements.
- To serve as the primary contact for the Freight Management Team regarding all resourcing issues.
- To manage the rostering process from inception to execution, collaborating closely with freight delivery managers and under the guidance of the Freight Performance and Policy Manager.
- To continuously enhance systems and processes.
- To lead, inspire, and develop the Freight Rostering Team.
- To provide expert guidance on all rostering-related matters.
- To cover for team members as necessary.
- Ensure the efficient production of traincrew diagrams and rosters in accordance with company guidelines and standards.
- Supervise the input of traincrew diagrams and rostered shifts into the Fatigue Management system.
- Possess a comprehensive understanding of fatigue management standards relevant to traincrew rostering.
- Adhere to company policies regarding safety protocols and briefings.
- Guarantee that the output from the rostering team meets the highest standards of quality and accuracy.
- Ensure compliance with company policies while considering:
- Impact on staff safety and fatigue
- Efficient staff utilization
- Effective use of accommodations and transportation
- Collaborate with delivery managers to address daily challenges, resource planning, and task allocation.
- Monitor adjustments to the plan throughout the week.
- Coordinate with Business Managers and Planning Manager for work acceptance.
- Strive for continuous improvement in roster efficiency.
- Collaborate with other departments to enhance the overall train operation.
- Extensive knowledge and experience in rostering and planning, preferably within a rail freight context.
- Proven experience in leading and developing teams.
- Background in managing an operational workforce with variable shift patterns.
- Exceptional interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated proactive and pragmatic approach.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; experience with diagramming tools is advantageous.
- Familiarity with Network Rail Online Logistics and Train Running Under System TOPS.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
- Assertive and confident in addressing issues.
- Understanding of operational staff terms and conditions.
- Experience in making critical decisions in challenging situations to meet customer expectations safely and cost-effectively.
- Excellent geographical knowledge of the UK railway infrastructure.
- Able to present information clearly and concisely.
- Effective communication with personnel at all levels.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations applicable to freight operations.
- A proven team player capable of delivering under demanding circumstances.
- Holder of a full UK driving license.
