Purpose of the Role
- Oversee a team of Freight Resource Planners, ensuring optimal resource allocation and timely issuance of rosters to deliver Colas Rail Freight services effectively and safely.
- Allocate resources in accordance with Colas Rail's terms and conditions, rostering guidelines, and customer requirements.
- Serve as the primary contact for the Freight Management Team regarding all resourcing issues.
- Manage the rostering process from inception to execution, collaborating closely with freight delivery managers under the guidance of the Freight Performance and Policy Manager.
- Continuously enhance systems and processes for improved efficiency.
- Lead, inspire, and develop the Freight Rostering Team.
- Provide expert guidance on all rostering-related matters.
- Act as a substitute for team members when necessary.
- Ensure the efficient production of traincrew diagrams and rosters in compliance with Colas Rail's rostering principles and guidelines.
- Supervise the input of traincrew diagrams and rostered shifts into the Fatigue Management system.
- Possess a comprehensive understanding of fatigue standards and considerations when creating traincrew rosters.
- Adhere to company policies regarding Safety Tours and Safety Briefs.
- Guarantee that the output from the rostering team meets the highest standards of quality and accuracy.
- Ensure compliance with company policies while considering:
- Impact on staff safety and fatigue
- Efficient staff utilization
- Optimal use of accommodations and transportation
- Collaborate with delivery managers to address daily operational challenges, resource planning, and task allocation.
- Monitor and adjust plans as they evolve throughout the week.
- Coordinate with Business Managers and Planning Manager for work acceptance.
- Strive for continuous improvement in roster efficiency.
- Work alongside other departments to enhance the overall effectiveness of the train planning process.
- Proven experience in rostering and planning, preferably within a rail freight context.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team.
- Experience managing an operational workforce with variable shift patterns.
- Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Proactive and pragmatic approach to problem-solving.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; familiarity with diagramming tools is advantageous.
- Competent in using logistics and train running systems.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a problem-solving mindset.
- Assertive and confident in addressing issues.
- Knowledge of operational staff terms and conditions.
- Experience making critical decisions in challenging scenarios to meet customer expectations safely and cost-effectively.
- Excellent geographical knowledge of the UK railway infrastructure.
- Able to present information clearly and concisely.
- Effective communicator across all organizational levels.
- Understanding of rules and regulations relevant to freight operations.
- A collaborative team player capable of delivering results in demanding environments.
- Holder of a full UK driving license.
