Freight Operations Control Manager

As a Freight Operations Control Manager at Colas Rail UK, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and effective operation of our rail freight services. Your primary responsibility will be to lead and direct the controllers on shift, making decisions that protect company interests and minimize the effects of operational incidents.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day operation of Colas services in a safe and proper manner, adhering to Safety Certificate, railway Group Standards, and Colas requirements.
- Take prompt and appropriate action to ensure the safety of people, equipment, and infrastructure in normal operating conditions and during out-of-course situations.
- Minimize and manage the effects of operational incidents, cancellations, and lateness.
- Manage a team of Freight Operations Controllers, including timesheets, annual leave requests, and Freight Roster.
- Facilitate the Daily Freight Management Meeting.
- Regularly liaise with Freight Management, Loco Planning, Freight Operations, Engineering, Planning & Rostering, and Train Planning to ensure collaboration.
- Assist Freight Control Desks and issue guidance and support to Freight Controllers.
- Manage accidents and incidents, including escalation and associated paperwork.
- Perform performance monitoring and TRUST Delay Attribution and associated reporting.
- Conduct face-to-face team and safety briefs.
- Induct and train new control staff.
- Complete assessments and skills needs analysis on Freight Control Staff.
- Ensure all processes, procedures, and general day-to-day duties are followed and carried out at all times.
- Manage all aspects of Freight Control personnel, including performance, disciplinaries, training, timesheets, annual leave, and absences.
- Create new processes and procedures for Freight Control when required.
- Attend Freight Planning and Freight Review Meetings.
- Attend handover meetings from the rostering team.
- Represent Colas in industry control meetings and exercises as necessary to enhance the reputation and protect the interests of the business.
Requirements
- Experience of Railway Operations.
- Good Railway geographical knowledge.
- Experience and knowledge of the Rail Freight industry.
- Accomplished Control experience and knowledge.
- The ability to think outside the box, strong decision-making skills.
- Good negotiation skills and able to resolve problems.
- Leadership and Management qualities.
- Strong IT Skills / In-depth knowledge of TOPS.
