Freight Operations Control Manager

We are seeking an experienced Freight Operations Control Manager to join our team at Colas Rail UK. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of our freight services, ensuring safe and effective decision-making, and leading a team of Freight Operations Controllers.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the normal day-to-day operation of Colas services in a safe and proper manner in accordance with Safety Certificate, railway Group Standards, and Colas requirements.
- Take prompt and appropriate action to ensure safety of people and equipment and infrastructure in normal operating conditions and during out of course situations.
- Ensure the control team minimises and manages the effects of operational incidents, cancellations, and lateness.
- Manage a team of Freight Operations Controllers, including timesheets, annual leave requests, Freight Roster, and all other responsibilities of managing a team.
- Facilitate Daily Freight Management Meeting.
- Regular and consistent daily/weekly liaison with Freight Management, Loco Planning, Freight Operations, Engineering, Planning & Rostering, and Train Planning to ensure collaboration.
- Assist Freight Control Desks.
- Issue guidance and support to Freight Controllers and assist in Safety Critical decision-making.
- Manage Accidents and Incidents, including escalation and associated paperwork.
- Performance Monitoring and TRUST Delay Attribution and associated reporting.
- Face-to-Face Team/Safety Briefs.
- Induction and training of New Control Staff.
- Complete Assessments and Skills Needs Analysis on Freight Control Staff.
- Ensure all processes, procedures, and general day-to-day duties are being followed and carried out at all times.
- Manage all aspects of Freight Control personnel, including performance, disciplinaries, training, timesheets, annual Leave, and absences.
- Create new processes and procedures for Freight Control when required.
- Attend Freight Planning and Freight Review Meetings.
- Attend handover meetings from rostering team.
- Represent Colas in industry control meetings and exercises as necessary to enhance the reputation and protect the interests of the business.
Requirements
- Experience of Railway Operations.
- Good Railway geographical knowledge.
- Experience and knowledge of the Rail Freight industry.
- Accomplished Control experience and knowledge.
- The ability to think outside the box, strong decision-making skills.
- Good negotiation skills and able to resolve problems.
- Must have Leadership and Management qualities.
- Strong IT Skills/In-depth knowledge of TOPS.
