Colas Rail UK is seeking a skilled Freight Operations Control Manager to lead our operations team in Rugby. This is a challenging role that requires strong leadership, analytical skills, and the ability to make safe and effective decisions.

About the Role:

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of Colas services in accordance with Safety Certificate, railway Group Standards, and Colas requirements. They will also be expected to lead and direct controllers on shift, ensuring that safe and effective decisions are made to protect company interests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the normal day-to-day operation of Colas services in a safe and proper manner
  • Taking prompt and appropriate action to ensure safety of people and equipment and infrastructure in normal operating conditions and during out-of-course situations
  • Ensuring the control team minimises and manages the effects of operational incidents, cancellations, and lateness
  • Manage a team of Freight Operations Controllers including timesheets, annual leave requests, Freight Roster, and all other responsibilities of managing a team
  • Facilitate Daily Freight Management Meeting
  • Regular and consistent daily/weekly liaison with Freight Management, Loco Planning, Freight Operations, Engineering, Planning & Rostering, and Train Planning to ensure collaboration
  • Assist Freight Control Desks
  • Issue guidance and support to Freight Controllers and assist in Safety-Critical decision making
  • Manage Accidents and Incidents including escalation and associated paperwork
  • Performance Monitoring and TRUST Delay Attribution and associated reporting
  • Face-to-Face Team/Safety Briefs
  • Induction and training of New Control Staff
  • Complete Assessments and Skills Needs Analysis on Freight Control Staff
  • Ensure that all processes, procedures, and general day-to-day duties are being followed and carried out at all times
  • Manage all aspects of Freight Control personnel including performance, disciplinaries, training, timesheets, annual leave, and absences
  • Create new processes and procedures for Freight Control when required
  • Attend Freight Planning and Freight Review Meetings
  • Attend handover meetings from rostering team
  • Represent Colas in industry control meetings and exercises as necessary to enhance the reputation and protect the interests of the business

About You:

We are looking for someone with experience in Railway Operations, good geographical knowledge of the rail network, and experience and knowledge of the Rail Freight industry. The ideal candidate will have accomplished Control experience and knowledge, strong decision-making skills, good negotiation skills, and leadership and management qualities. Strong IT skills and in-depth knowledge of TOPS are also essential.
