Preston, Lancashire, United Kingdom Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Job Overview

We are excited to invite you to join our dedicated team in a vibrant 33-bedded surgical unit specializing in general, colorectal, upper GI, urology, and emergency procedures. Our ward receives patients from various departments, including surgical assessment units and emergency departments, providing a dynamic and supportive environment for professional growth and skill enhancement.

With the assistance of our experienced staff, including five charge nurses and two newly appointed ward managers, we are committed to empowering you to deliver exceptional care to our patients who rely on our expertise.

Key Responsibilities

As a leader in the ward, you will coordinate daily operations, participate in ward rounds, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and mentor ward staff. This role will enhance your nursing competencies, leadership capabilities, and adaptability to diverse situations.

Our unit fosters a supportive atmosphere where all inquiries are welcomed, ensuring you receive guidance in navigating your professional journey. The surgical ward comprises multi-specialist teams, including Colorectal, Urology, Upper GI, Vascular, General Surgery, and Orthopaedics, allowing you to care for acutely ill patients pre- and post-surgery, participate in medical rounds, administer medications, provide personal care, and facilitate safe discharges.

To promote effective communication, we conduct regular ward meetings, daily safety briefings, and monthly newsletters, maintaining an open-door policy for any additional questions or concerns.

About Our Organization

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is dedicated to offering a broad spectrum of educational opportunities while upholding our Trust Values and prioritizing patient safety across all services.

As advocates for change, we encourage our team members to propose innovative practices and collaborate towards shared goals. Our inclusive and diverse team culture is something we take great pride in, as we respect one another and promote knowledge sharing.

Our core values shape our identity and conduct:

  • Compassionate Care: We treat everyone with dignity and respect, demonstrating our commitment to care.
  • Individual Recognition: We value and respond to the unique needs of each individual.
  • Inclusive Involvement: We engage patients in decisions regarding their care and treatment, ensuring transparency.
  • Collaborative Teamwork: We work cohesively as a team, involving patients, families, and other services to deliver optimal care.
  • Personal Accountability: We each take responsibility for providing the highest standards of care and delivering a service we can be proud of.

Role Responsibilities

In this surgical unit, you will care for patients undergoing various surgical procedures, including appendectomies, cholecystectomies, bowel resections, stoma formations, stent insertions, amputations, angioplasties, and laparotomies.

Your primary duties will include:

  • Leading and coordinating ward activities, collaborating closely with ward managers.
  • Ensuring safe patient discharges, admissions, and transfers.
  • Supporting the ward team in delivering high-quality care.

This position offers opportunities for further training, enabling you to conduct ward audits, performance reviews, utilize health roster systems, and promote team learning through educational sessions in collaboration with our clinical education team.

Our team comprises outstanding surgeons and educational leaders, with a structured approach to consultant-led ward rounds that enhance patient care and reduce hospital stays.

We take immense pride in our unit and work collaboratively to provide exceptional care. We welcome you to reach out for an informal discussion about this role and would be delighted to invite you to experience our ward firsthand.
