Preston, Lancashire, United Kingdom Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Full time

Job Overview

The Head & Neck division is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled professional to join our team on a temporary basis to provide coverage during a maternity leave. Lancashire Teaching Hospitals serves as a hub for Oncology, offering a wide range of specialized major head and neck surgical services. The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role is pivotal in supporting patients from the initial diagnosis through to rehabilitation after treatment, including the specialized management of altered airways.

Our team operates numerous nurse-led and multidisciplinary outpatient clinics, collaborating closely with Dietitians, Speech Therapists, and Consultant Therapeutic Radiographers to deliver comprehensive care for this unique patient demographic. The role also involves working in tandem with a Patient Navigator, another Macmillan CNS in Head & Neck, Cancer Support Workers, a team of 9 head and neck surgeons, and 2 Oncologists.

You will receive support from a Lead CNS and a Nurse Consultant specializing in Head & Neck. Our facilities include specialized inpatient wards dedicated to major head and neck surgery and oncology, and providing assistance to inpatients and ward staff is an integral part of this position. Non-Medical Prescribing is a significant component of this role, and candidates must be prepared to undertake the necessary training if they are not currently qualified. The head and neck team has consistently achieved high ratings in the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey, being recognized as the top-rated team in the Trust on multiple occasions.

Key Responsibilities

We are in search of a proactive and experienced Registered Nurse in head and neck to collaborate with the existing CNS team, which delivers specialized nursing interventions throughout the patient journey for both head and neck and thyroid cancer.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting specialized nurse-led outpatient clinics for thyroid cancer follow-ups, Rapid Access Neck Lump Clinics, and working closely with Allied Health Professionals to provide Pre, Peri, and Post-treatment clinics, in addition to participating in consultant MDT clinics.
  • Assessing and delivering specialized care throughout the patient journey.
  • Being a Non-Medical Prescriber or willing to pursue the qualification, as expert symptom management is crucial for this patient group.
  • Managing patients with altered airways and facilitating safe transitions into community care, which may involve home visits.
  • Engaging in clinical audits and research, contributing to the head and neck service agenda, including the PETNeck2 study.

Working with Us

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals provides specialized head and neck cancer services to approximately 1.6 million patients across the Lancashire & South Cumbria region. The Trust uniquely offers both major surgical and oncology treatments on the same site, enabling the CNS team to support patients throughout their entire care pathway.

Joining our team means gaining the knowledge and pride that comes from knowing your contributions genuinely impact patient care and staff support, ensuring we continue to thrive and deliver exceptional healthcare across our local communities.

You will have access to diverse development opportunities, acquire new skills, meet remarkable individuals, and collaborate closely with medical colleagues who are highly supportive of the CNS team.

You will make a significant impact, be encouraged to think innovatively, and help drive improvements in patient care and experience, making your role essential and something to take pride in.

Detailed Responsibilities

The role encompasses, but is not limited to:

  • Functioning as an autonomous Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Managing a designated caseload and coordinating care for that group.
  • Providing expert advice related to specific conditions or treatment pathways, focusing on enhancing patient care and service development.
  • Conducting holistic assessments of patients, planning, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based care.
  • Offering specialized advice to patients' families, caregivers, and the broader multidisciplinary team.
  • Performing specialized nursing procedures related to head and neck cancer and thyroid cancer.
  • Contributing to workforce development through education and training initiatives.
  • Leading service development within the team.
  • Participating in research activities and clinical audits within the specialist area.
  • Collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to ensure cohesive patient management.
  • Acting as a key worker for designated patients throughout their care pathway.
  • Supervising the delivery of a range of clinical and core nursing skills and interventions to meet both physiological and psychosocial needs.
