Key Responsibilities

As a Lead Surgical Support Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting the surgical team by performing various essential tasks, including:

  • Welcoming patients to the theatre department and ensuring their comfort.
  • Preparing surgical instruments and equipment for procedures.
  • Conducting thorough checks, such as counting surgical swabs and instruments, and measuring fluids.
  • Monitoring and maintaining cleanliness in theatre areas post-surgery.
  • Safely disposing of waste materials.
  • Observing and recording patients' vital signs, promptly reporting any concerns.

Job Duties

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Delivering high-quality, personalized care in alignment with established local and national standards.
  • Assisting patients with accessing restroom facilities and ensuring their physical comfort.
  • Supporting the positioning of patients in both the theatre and recovery areas, safeguarding pressure points and maintaining comfort.
  • Exhibiting flexibility in working hours, including days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Performing clinical duties relevant to the surgical environment upon achieving necessary competencies.
  • Handling and storing patient specimens in accordance with Trust policies.
  • Ensuring patient safety by adhering to health, safety, and security regulations.
  • Promoting equality in care by recognizing and respecting individual needs and preferences.
  • Contributing to a safe, clean, and efficient care environment, compliant with hygiene standards.
  • Continuously developing personal competencies in line with Trust and local policies.
  • Documenting and communicating information in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Proactively addressing and resolving local issues and complaints, reporting outcomes to management.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Experience in a surgical theatre environment.
  • Extensive knowledge in the processing and decontamination of endoscopes.
  • Understanding of health and safety regulations within healthcare settings.
  • Awareness of confidentiality principles.
  • Familiarity with the responsibilities of a senior surgical support worker.
  • Proven experience in collaborative teamwork.

Educational Requirements

Essential

  • Basic general education.
  • GCSEs in Maths and English at grade C/4 or above, or equivalent Level 2 numeracy and literacy skills.
  • INCS/NVQ Level 3 in care or a similar qualification (to be obtained within 18 months of employment).
  • NVQ Level 2 in care or BCNS.

Desirable

  • Basic IT skills.
