Key Qualifications for Anaesthesia:

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • FRCA or equivalent qualifications

  • Specialist Registration in Anaesthesia or equivalent experience

Desirable Attributes for Critical Care:

  • FUSIC mentorship
  • Capability to support education and governance of ECHO and point-of-care ultrasound services
  • Experience in recruitment, supervision, and training of junior medical staff

Main Responsibilities

As per the established rota and job schedule, you will deliver a consultant-led, patient-focused clinical service within the critical care department. This encompasses:

  • Conducting twice-daily patient reviews during weekdays and daily assessments on weekends.
  • Making consultant-led decisions regarding patient admissions and therapeutic plans, adhering to Trust-wide policies or those developed by the Critical Care Directorate.
  • Handling emergency duties, including on-call responsibilities, relevant clinical diagnostics, patient treatment, and attending meetings related to patient care and administration.

The Division's academic and research endeavors are facilitated through various academic centers at UCL. Critical care consultants actively engage in educational and research activities at the Bloomsbury Institute for Intensive Care Medicine and the Centre for Perioperative Medicine, maintaining strong collaborative ties with UCL Healthcare Engineering, the Institute of Health Informatics, and the Department for Targeted Intervention. UCLH/UCL is recognized as a leading Biomedical Research Centre, with research outputs in Critical Care and Peri-operative Medicine ranked among the best in the UK.

Person Specification

Professional Qualifications

Essential:

  • Eligibility for full UK GMC Registration
  • GMC Specialist Register in Intensive Care Medicine or within 6 months of expected CCT/CESR approval
  • Provider status in ALS, ATLS (or equivalent), and APLS (or equivalent)
  • GMC Specialist Register for anaesthesia or within 2 months of attaining CCT in anaesthesia
  • FRCA or equivalent anaesthetic experience

Desirable:

  • Instructor status in life support courses (ALS, ATLS, APLS, PALS)
  • FRCA (or equivalent training/exam)
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • MCEM or equivalent
  • Higher degree

Clinical Experience & Skills

Essential:

  • Critical care experience equivalent to CCT in Intensive Care Medicine
  • Ability to work independently and make sound clinical decisions
  • Compassionate approach towards patients and their families
  • Willingness to accept leadership responsibilities and experience in multidisciplinary teamwork
  • Capability to take full responsibility for the clinical care of patients of varying acuity
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development, staying current with national guidelines relevant to critical care
  • Proficiency in performing essential clinical procedures for critical care, including advanced airway management
  • Completion of recognized training leading to a CCT in anaesthesia or equivalent experience
  • Experience in anaesthesia for major surgical procedures, including significant laparoscopic surgeries
  • Minimum of 6 months working experience in the NHS

Desirable:

  • Experience with various modes of cardiac output monitoring
  • Experience in preoperative medicine and managing complex high-risk patients
  • Accreditation in critical care ultrasound, e.g., echocardiography, lung and patient simulation, FUSIC mentorship
  • Ability to supervise, educate, and train junior medical staff
  • Experience in haematology/oncology critical care
  • Experience in multidisciplinary pre-assessment and pre-operative preparation of complex patients
  • Evidence of commitment to service improvement and clinical excellence
  • Diverse experience in 'outside areas' including paediatric radiotherapy and nuclear medicine, CT, endoscopy

Quality Improvement & Management

Essential:

  • Experience in conducting audits and quality improvement projects, with a willingness to develop local programs
  • Proficiency with relevant IT systems
  • Ability to mentor both medical and nursing staff

Desirable:

  • Participation in relevant management or leadership training programs

Research & Teaching Experience

Essential:

  • Strong commitment to teaching with a proven track record at all educational levels
  • Familiarity with research methodologies and a record of publications
  • Ability to engage in translational research aligned with UCLH's themes
  • Completion of a teaching course

Desirable:

  • Peer-reviewed publications
