Role Overview

Position: Literacy Support Volunteer for Individuals with Visual Impairments

Location: Maidstone

Commitment: At least 1 hour per week

We are seeking a dedicated individual to assist a person in enhancing their reading skills. If you have a passion for literature, this opportunity is perfect for you. While a background in education, particularly in special educational needs (SEN), is advantageous, it is not a prerequisite. We value enthusiasm and a willingness to support others in their learning journey.

The individual you will be supporting has a visual impairment, making patience and understanding essential qualities for this role. This position is based at our service in Maidstone.

Required Skills

  • A genuine love for reading and ideally experience in teaching or education
  • A good sense of humor, excellent conversational skills, and the ability to listen attentively
  • Reliability and punctuality
  • Kindness, empathy, and patience
  • Ability to handle information in accordance with our confidentiality and data protection policies
  • Capability to assist with sighted guiding or orientation when necessary

Please note that applicants must be over the age of 18 to be considered for this role.

For the safety of those we support, a DBS check and two satisfactory references will be required before confirming your volunteer position. Additionally, you will need to undergo safeguarding training, along with any role-specific training.
