Company Overview

At Ocado Group, we are revolutionizing the retail landscape by integrating cutting-edge technologies such as cloud computing, robotics, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things. Our mission is to empower our partner clients globally through our advanced robotics platform, known as the Ocado Smart Platform (OSP), which drives our highly automated Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs). This innovative approach enables us to operate a premier online grocery service that automates the picking of products for seamless delivery.

Role Overview

The Project Delivery Talent Pool is dedicated to providing skilled project professionals to our regional teams, facilitating a variety of projects worldwide. These projects include large-scale installations of our OSP solutions in partner facilities, the introduction of new products, and modifications to existing systems.

As the Site Operations Manager, you will take the lead on-site for the deployment of Grid Structures and Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE) in our partners' automated facilities, including CFCs and Distribution Centres (DCs). Your role will involve supporting the planning and execution of installation tasks while enhancing our operational processes.

Your responsibilities will include overseeing installation contractors and internal teams, coordinating all activities on-site, representing Ocado in interactions with the partner's general contractor, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, and delivering high-quality installations. Your technical expertise in engineering and contractor management will be crucial in ensuring that projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the installation of grid structures and MHE in automated facilities, ensuring compliance with cost, quality, safety, and scheduling requirements.
  • Lead and manage project stakeholders and maintain a site presence for a workforce of approximately 200 individuals over a period of 6-14 months.
  • Oversee daily management of a diverse team, fostering individual development and setting clear objectives.
  • Act as the primary contact on-site, representing Ocado with partner counterparts and their contractors.
  • Ensure effective safety measures are in place on the construction site.
  • Develop and maintain an installation plan that considers buildability and accessibility.
  • Oversee the installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of MHE, adhering to stringent budgets and timelines.
  • Establish Safe Systems of Work (SSoW) by implementing best practices.
  • Conduct and update relevant Health and Safety Risk Assessments.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain teams to select appropriate installation contractors.
  • Perform quality checks on installed structural grids and MHE, which may involve working at heights.
  • Identify and document MHE risks while anticipating engineering challenges.
  • Assist in planning and scheduling multiple work packages and contractors on-site.
  • Prioritize and resolve engineering issues, effectively communicating technical details to relevant teams.
  • Summarize technical challenges and commercial options for senior management review.
  • Build strong relationships with contractors and peers on-site, contributing to a collaborative work environment.
  • Proactively enhance best practices for our delivery methodology and ensure lessons learned are documented.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in managing complex, high-value installations and applying project management methodologies.
  • Experience in construction site management with a large team of contractors (150+ personnel).
  • Relevant experience in mechanical installation of structural components or automated systems.
  • Familiarity with managing the installation and commissioning of automation equipment.
  • Experience overseeing high-risk activities, including working at heights and confined spaces.
  • Strong understanding of national and local construction compliance and safety regulations.
  • Ability to collaborate with legal teams on construction standards and risk mitigation.
  • Skilled in managing high-value contracts with significant labor content.
  • Formal project management qualification is preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Possession of a national/local HSE competency for construction site access.
