About the Role

The Project Delivery Talent Pool is dedicated to supplying skilled project professionals to our regional teams, facilitating a diverse array of projects globally. This includes large-scale implementations of our OSP solutions in partner facilities, the launch of new products, and enhancements to existing setups.

As the Site Installation Supervisor, you will take the lead on-site for the deployment of Grid Structures and Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE) at our partners' automated facilities, including CFCs, Distribution Centres (DCs), and warehouses. Your role will involve supporting the planning of installation activities and refining our operational processes.

Your responsibilities will encompass managing installation contractors and internal teams, coordinating all activities between Ocado and subcontractors on-site, representing Ocado in interactions with the partner's general contractor, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, and delivering high-quality installations that meet stringent standards. Your background in technical engineering and contractor management will be crucial in ensuring that installations are completed on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality and safety standards. You will engage with innovative solutions and technologies across our expanding network of sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the installation of designated grid structures and MHE in automated facilities, ensuring compliance with contractor costs, installation methods, quality standards, safety requirements, and timelines. You will also contribute to the planning of installation tasks and process improvements.
  • Lead and manage project stakeholders, suppliers, and a workforce of approximately 200 individuals on-site for durations ranging from 6 to 14 months.
  • Exercise direct and indirect management of team members, fostering their development and collaborating with them to establish objectives and growth plans.
  • Inspire and motivate your team, demonstrating a commitment to their professional development.
  • Act as the primary on-site contact and Ocado representative for partner counterparts and their contractors.
  • Ensure safety protocols are rigorously followed on the construction/installation site.
  • Develop effective installation plans that consider buildability and access.
  • Manage the installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of all MHE on-site, adhering to challenging budgets and schedules while maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Define Safe Systems of Work (SSoW) and implement best practices.
  • Prepare, update, and approve relevant Ocado Health and Safety Risk Assessments.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain teams to ensure the selection of installation contractors under appropriate conditions.
  • Conduct physical quality checks of structural grids/MHE installed in the field, which may involve working at heights.
  • Identify, mitigate, and document MHE risks while anticipating engineering challenges.
  • Assist in the planning and scheduling of multiple work packages and contractors/personnel on-site.
  • Prioritize and resolve engineering issues, effectively communicating technical details and seeking decisions from relevant engineering teams.
  • Summarize technical challenges and commercial options for senior management review and decision-making.
  • Build strong relationships and collaborate with contractors, peers, and other project team members on-site.
  • Contribute proactively to the development of best practices for our delivery methodology.
  • Ensure that lessons learned are documented and shared.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in managing complex, multi-million-pound installations, utilizing project management methodologies at scale.
  • Experience in Construction Site Management for large teams of contractors/personnel, typically exceeding 150 individuals.
  • Relevant experience in mechanical installation of structural steel, pallet racking, or Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS).
  • Experience in overseeing the installation and commissioning of automation equipment or conveyor systems.
  • Proficient in managing high-risk activities, including working at heights, confined spaces, or lifting operations.
  • Strong understanding of national and local legislation regarding construction and engineering compliance and safety.
  • Knowledge of the responsibilities involved in planning and executing complex lifting operations.
  • Ability to collaborate with legal teams on construction standards and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Skilled in managing multi-million-pound contracts with significant labor components.
  • Possession of a formal project management qualification.
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant engineering field (or equivalent experience).
  • Holds a national/local HSE competency allowing access to construction sites.
