Local Area Coordinator

London, Greater London, United Kingdom The Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea Council Full time

Passionate about nurturing the power of people and places? Help us trial a new way of working.

In Kensington and Chelsea, we put local people and local businesses at the heart of decision-making. Sometimes, however, providing services that are responsive, effective and efficient is not enough. When it comes to people who might be experiencing complex challenges or some form of exclusion in their lives, solutions need to be delivered on a more personalised basis. That's why we're trialling the use of Local Area Coordinators across Kensington and Chelsea and the neighbouring borough of Westminster. This is an established model that encourages "walking alongside" people to help them find sustainable (often non-service based) solutions to concerns and challenges they might have such as health, disability, self-neglect and ageing, whilst also promoting inclusive connected communities. To find out more about the Local Area Coordination approach, its principles and its evidence, you can visit here: We are introducing Local Area Coordination in two areas of Kensington and Chelsea to start with, so as a Local Area Coordinator for Chelsea Riverside, you will be paving the way for this new approach within a small team which we plan to grow over time as part of our wider efforts to support people earlier and more effectively within their homes and local communities.

The Role:

With responsibility for the Chelsea Riverside area, you will work on the ground with communities, delivering an all-age, open-access service where there are no referrals needed or time limits to the support you deliver. With the time and resource to build trust with local communities, you can expect to take on a caseload of people with varying cultural backgrounds, many of whom are dealing with complex challenges. You will build positive relationships, helping people identify their own strengths and needs and support them to plan the changes they'd like to make for a better life. You'll connect them with sources of support and advice and will encourage community participation on a wider level, but your focus will be on working with people to envision a better life for themselves, regardless of any diagnoses or identified challenges, and coordinate their plans for achieving it.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information. Additional information also available within the Candidate Briefing Pack

About You:

You'll be a good listener who can establish rapport and build trust with all kinds of people and knows how to build circles of support – having outstanding interpersonal skills and masses of empathy is vital. Your background could be in community development, education, health or social care but you'll be passionate about nurturing people to achieve better outcomes in life rather than 'fixing' things and have experience using person-centred and holistic approaches. You'll be ready to fit yourself into existing community work and be ready to work closely with housing, employment, the NHS, social care and the voluntary sector. Capable of advocating for system change by championing the voice of residents, you'll be able to manage priorities, balancing longer-term projects with day-to-day community work.

In return, you can look forward to a package that includes a competitive salary, a high-quality pension scheme and generous annual leave plus bank holidays. We operate a hybrid working policy across the council meaning you can split your time between the office and working from home, dependent on business needs.
