Job Responsibilities

The Commonwealth of Virginia is dedicated to enhancing public safety through impactful interventions aimed at improving the lives of young individuals, thereby strengthening families and communities.

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice is currently in search of a skilled and motivated Therapist to: Deliver evidence-based mental health, substance use, sex offender, and aggression management treatment services to residents, with the goal of fostering their well-being and rehabilitation while minimizing the risk of reoffending. A primary aspect of this role involves providing direct clinical services to youth through individual, group, and family therapies.

Moreover, the Therapist is expected to collaborate with various disciplines to create and sustain a therapeutic environment for residents. This position necessitates working primarily in-person with dedicated residents aged 14 to 20 years at a designated juvenile correctional facility.

Shift Details

This recruitment advertisement is for multiple hires. The mid-day shift will operate from early to late hours, including alternating weekends. Certain incentives may be applicable for these positions.

Employment Requirements

Selected candidates must commit to an initial basic skills training program, which consists of a three-week academy featuring classroom instruction, skill-based classes, practical applications, and scenario-based training. This training is typically scheduled during standard business hours.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should possess considerable knowledge in providing evidence-based treatment services/psychotherapy to adolescents, experience in individual, family, and/or group therapy, and proficiency in collaborating within a multidisciplinary treatment team. Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work independently are essential. For sex offender treatment, a working knowledge of treatment and risk assessment is required. For substance use treatment, familiarity with substance use treatment methodologies is necessary.

Additional Considerations

Experience working with adolescents in correctional settings, residential facilities, or group homes is preferred. Licensure in a relevant discipline such as LCSW or LPC is advantageous. For sex offender treatment, certification as a Sex Offender Treatment Provider (CSOTP) is required. For substance use treatment, certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) or Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner is beneficial.
