Job Responsibilities

About the Agency:
The Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is dedicated to safeguarding the community by equipping court-involved youth with the necessary skills to thrive as responsible citizens. DJJ prioritizes excellence in public safety through effective interventions that enhance the lives of youth, while also strengthening families and communities throughout the state.

About the Role:
In this position, the selected candidate will apply best practices in supervising, securing, and rehabilitating juveniles within a correctional environment, fostering a safe atmosphere that promotes personal growth and transformation. The incumbent will oversee the daily execution and management of the Facility-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (FW-PBIS) program, which includes resident rewards and access to various activities. Additionally, the role involves managing the facility's incentive room and coordinating numerous facility-wide events to support the FW-PBIS framework.

Key Responsibilities Include:
- Preparing and securing the Incentive Unit for eligible residents' use, adhering to the operations checklist for the incentive area, including opening and closing procedures.
- Supervising residents, clarifying behavioral expectations, and collecting relevant data.
- Ensuring safety and security through direct supervision of residents participating in incentive activities and program offerings.
- Documenting resident behavior according to established protocols, maintaining daily records and reports, and ensuring no lapses in documenting incidents involving security breaches or life-threatening situations.
- Intervening during behavioral crises to maintain safety, utilizing de-escalation strategies and techniques.

Schedule Requirements:
This position necessitates a rotating schedule, which includes after-hours (5:00 PM to 8:00 PM) and weekend responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience in supervising and engaging with at-risk or adjudicated youth is essential. A solid understanding of security principles, treatment methodologies, and service management in a secure residential environment is required. Knowledge of intellectual disabilities and mental health conditions is also necessary. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to work independently, effectively plan, organize, and supervise residents, and communicate proficiently both orally and in writing. Skills in conflict resolution and the application of verbal and physical intervention techniques are critical. Familiarity with security protocols and group facilitation practices is expected. Collaboration with interdisciplinary team members in delivering comprehensive programming is vital. Attention to detail, patience, and resilience are essential attributes, along with the ability to provide empathetic support to both staff and youth.

Additional Considerations:
Prior experience in facilitating group sessions with adolescents in direct care settings (such as group homes or detention centers) is preferred. The ideal candidate will employ evidence-based strategies to engage residents and inspire desired behaviors. A background in youth development, criminal justice, or social sciences, including a degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related field, is advantageous. Experience with PBIS, Motivational Interviewing, EPICS, Anger Replacement Training, basic behavior management, mental health first aid, trauma-informed care, and mindfulness training is desirable.

Application Process:
Individuals interested in this position must submit a completed employment application or attach a resume prior to the closing date. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered. It is encouraged to provide specific details regarding job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Background & Pre-employment Screenings:
Selected candidates will undergo a background investigation and pre-employment drug screening. Investigations may include fingerprint checks, local agency checks, employment verification, and education verification if relevant to the position.

Equal Opportunity Employer:
The Department of Juvenile Justice is committed to providing fair and equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants, adhering to applicable laws and regulations. Discrimination based on race, sex, color, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, veteran status, political affiliation, genetics, or disability is strictly prohibited.
