Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking dedicated individuals to serve as Juvenile Correctional Specialists (JCS) within the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). This role is essential in fostering a safe and supportive environment for youth in a correctional setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement effective supervision and security measures for juveniles in a correctional facility.
  • Ensure a safe and nurturing living environment that promotes personal growth and rehabilitation.
  • Monitor and oversee daily activities within assigned housing units to maintain safety and order.
  • Conduct regular safety checks and respond to behavioral incidents as necessary.
  • Complete all required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Engage with residents, staff, and visitors to foster a positive atmosphere.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to support the rehabilitation and reintegration of youth.
  • Serve as a role model and mentor, contributing to a therapeutic environment.

Employment Conditions

Selected candidates must be prepared to work flexible hours, including weekends and potential overtime during peak times. A commitment to completing mandatory training is required for all new hires.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, candidates should possess:

  • Knowledge of conflict resolution and verbal intervention techniques.
  • Understanding of safety and security protocols in a correctional environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
  • Capability to assess situations quickly and respond appropriately, including physical intervention when necessary.

Additional Considerations

Experience working with at-risk youth or in secure settings is preferred. Knowledge of crisis intervention strategies and adolescent development will be advantageous.
