Strategic Business Development Leader

Astex Pharmaceuticals, a pioneering force in innovative drug discovery and development, seeks an exceptional Associate Director/Director of Business Development & Partnerships. The Opportunity
As a key member of the Astex Corporate Development Team, you will be instrumental in driving collaborations and partnerships that underpin our business strategy. With a proven track record of deal-making and negotiation, you will identify and evaluate new partnership opportunities, establishing and nurturing relationships with key collaborators.
You will work closely with colleagues across various functions, including Corporate Development, Science and Innovation, Competitive Intelligence, Intellectual Property Management, and External Communications. Your expertise will be essential in negotiating agreements ranging from drug discovery and development alliances to all agreements that underpin our research and development activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Negotiate and manage strategic partnerships with pharma, biotech companies, leading academic research institutes, and multi-organisation consortia.
- Develop and maintain an expert understanding of the scientific landscape, competitive intelligence, and emerging opportunities.
- Build and maintain strong external networks with industry leaders in biopharma, academia, and finance.
Requirements:
- Masters or Ph.D. in a relevant field (Pharmaceutical R&D, Business Development, Technology Transfer) or MBA/advanced degree in a related field.
- Proven experience in business development within the pharmaceutical or biotech industry, particularly at the R&D stage or in an academic technology transfer environment.
- Familiarity with or experience in alliance management or similar roles in collaborative early-stage R&D.
We offer an excellent salary package, including a highly competitive annual salary of £120,000 - £180,000 depending on experience, as well as a comprehensive benefits package.
