Position Overview

In collaboration with the assigned Training Coordinator/Officer, the Junior Clinical Scientist Trainee will take charge of their development throughout the training program. This includes fulfilling the learning objectives specified in the Learning Guides, gaining practical experience in NHS scientific departments, and pursuing a complementary academic master's program at an accredited Higher Education Institution.

The Junior Clinical Scientist is expected to adhere to the standard operating procedures of the host department and the NHS organization, maintaining high standards of professionalism, health and safety, risk management, confidentiality, patient care, and respect for equality and diversity as outlined in the NHS Constitution.

This role will be held for a fixed term of three years, during which the trainee will engage in a comprehensive full-time program that combines practical learning with a part-time master's level academic curriculum. The trainee will follow the structured curriculum available on the NSHCS website.

Key Responsibilities

The trainee will complete the entire training program to progress through the various modules. In doing so, they will acquire the skills to perform and interpret clinical and specialized scientific processes, supported by both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience. Responsibilities include:

• Executing complex scientific and clinical tasks, including direct patient interactions.

• Evaluating, interpreting, and contrasting investigative and clinical alternatives.

• Making informed decisions, including clinical and differential judgments, based on intricate facts or situations affecting patients.

• Initiating and engaging in innovation, improvement, and research and development while contributing to the education of healthcare science trainees and other learners in the workplace.

The trainee is expected to complete all practical training and assessments alongside the academic master's course to qualify for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and to utilize the protected title of Clinical Scientist. Furthermore, they will gain experience to effectively communicate complex technical, scientific, and sensitive information to colleagues in both verbal and written formats.

Trainees must comply with the HCPC's standards for training, professional skills, behavior, and health.

Detailed Job Responsibilities


• Conduct a variety of clinical and scientific investigations relevant to the role, including processing blood and other samples, performing direct clinical measurements on patients, and engaging in procedures involving ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.

• Maintain a high level of professional competence in executing all tests, investigations, and measurements.

• Interpret and act on the results of tests, investigations, and measurements in line with departmental policies, procedures, and quality assurance systems.

• Provide feedback and recommendations on new proposals and protocols, particularly regarding service enhancements.

• Support medical, nursing, and other healthcare staff in the optimal and safe application of scientific procedures and complex equipment, including assisting in the design of new facilities.

• Aid in the procurement, acceptance, and utilization of medical devices and consumables.

• Ensure the safe operation of complex scientific and medical equipment, documenting all maintenance and calibration procedures performed and any corrective actions taken.

• Utilize reagents, consumables, hazardous materials, and equipment safely, adhering to Health and Safety policies.

• Engage in risk management processes, including risk assessments and the investigation and reporting of adverse incidents.

• Participate in internal and external audit processes and quality assurance systems.

• Undertake research and development within the department as an integral part of training and acquire relevant skills for conducting clinical audits.

• Assist in supervising and training support staff, students, and new appointees, and take part in departmental seminars and scientific meetings to share knowledge gained through study or research.

Essential Criteria

Evidence of research experience, such as a higher degree or equivalent scientific and academic capability, is considered advantageous for all candidates. Applicants for specific posts must hold relevant registration with the appropriate professional body. In-service applicants may apply without holding the specified degree requirements if they can meet additional criteria outlined on the NSHCS website.

A strong, genuine interest in scientific practice and its application to direct patient care in a clinical setting. Ability to design research investigations and experiments. Competence in analyzing and assessing scientific, technical, and medical literature. Capacity to make informed judgments, including clinical decisions based on relevant facts or situations impacting patients. Understanding of quality control and management assurance in a scientific or work-based context. Ability to develop proficiency in performing routine and complex techniques currently in use and to innovate and validate new techniques. Awareness of the role of their chosen specialty in healthcare and disease, and its application in a healthcare environment. Proficient IT skills and familiarity with common software applications for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and databases. Ability to analyze complex information, including laboratory or workshop data, images, and clinical details, to formulate appropriate advice and judgments.

Ability to work independently in planning and executing tasks while also collaborating with departmental supervisors. Demonstrated leadership capabilities. Under guidance, develop strong interpretative skills for advising multidisciplinary team members on patient diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Proficient in handling patient samples, hazardous reagents, and chemicals safely, in compliance with Health and Safety regulations. Ability to perform under pressure, demonstrating emotional resilience and effective prioritization and planning skills. Commitment to the values and principles of the NHS Constitution, emphasizing patient-centered care.

Essential Criteria

Capability to perform a wide range of duties as outlined in the Job Description. Highly developed coordination skills with good dexterity and hand-eye coordination necessary for fine analytical techniques. Willingness to meet the travel requirements associated with the training role and clinical rotations.
