Position Overview

In collaboration with the appointed Training Coordinator/Officer, the Junior Clinical Scientist Trainee will take charge of their own development throughout the training program. This includes fulfilling the learning objectives specified in the Learning Guides, gaining practical experience in NHS scientific departments, and pursuing the accompanying academic master's program at the designated Higher Education Institution.

The Junior Clinical Scientist is expected to adhere to the standard operating procedures of the host department and the NHS organization, maintaining high standards of professionalism, health and safety, risk management, confidentiality, patient care, and respect for equality and diversity as outlined in the NHS Constitution.

This position will be held for a fixed term of three years, during which the trainee will engage in a comprehensive full-time program that integrates work-based learning with a part-time academic master's course. The curriculum will align with the guidelines available on the NSHCS website.

Key Responsibilities

The trainee will complete the entire training program to progress through the various modules. This will involve acquiring the skills to perform and interpret clinical and specialized scientific processes, supported by both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Responsibilities include:

• Executing complex scientific and clinical tasks, including direct patient interactions.

• Evaluating, interpreting, and contrasting investigative and clinical alternatives.

• Making informed decisions, including clinical and differential judgments, based on intricate facts or scenarios affecting patients.

• Initiating and participating in innovation, enhancement, and research and development activities, while also contributing to the education of healthcare science trainees and other learners in the workplace.

The trainee is expected to complete all work-based training and assessments alongside the academic master's program to qualify for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and utilize the protected title of Clinical Scientist. Furthermore, they will gain work-based experience to effectively communicate complex technical, scientific, and sensitive information to colleagues in both verbal and written formats.

Trainees must meet the HCPC's standards for training, professional skills, behavior, and health.

Detailed Responsibilities


• Conduct a variety of clinical and scientific investigations relevant to the role, including processing blood and other samples, performing direct clinical measurements on patients, and executing procedures involving ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.

• Maintain a high level of professional competence in all tests, investigations, and measurements performed.

• Interpret and act on the results of tests and investigations according to departmental policies and quality systems.

• Provide insights and recommendations on new proposals and protocols, particularly for service enhancements.

• Assist in advising medical, nursing, and other healthcare staff on the optimal and safe use of scientific procedures and complex equipment, including contributing to the design of new facilities.

• Support the procurement, acceptance, and utilization of medical devices and consumables.

• Ensure the safe operation of complex scientific and medical equipment, documenting all maintenance and calibration activities and any corrective measures taken.

• Utilize reagents, consumables, and hazardous materials safely, adhering to Health and Safety policies.

• Engage in risk management processes, including risk assessments and the investigation and reporting of adverse incidents.

• Participate in internal and external audits and quality assurance systems.

• Conduct research and development within the department as part of the training, acquiring relevant skills for clinical audits.

• Assist in supervising and training support staff, students, and new appointees, and take part in departmental seminars and scientific meetings to share knowledge gained through study or research.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential Criteria

Evidence of research experience, such as a higher degree or equivalent scientific and academic capabilities, is desirable for all candidates. Applicants for reconstructive science roles (maxillofacial prosthetics) must hold current registration as a dental technician with the General Dental Council. In-service applicants may apply even if they do not meet the above degree requirements, provided they can fulfill additional criteria outlined on the NSHCS website.

A strong, in-depth interest in scientific practice and its application to direct patient care in a clinical setting. Capability to design research investigations and experiments. Proficiency in analyzing and assessing scientific, technical, and medical literature. Ability to make informed judgments, including clinical decisions involving facts or situations impacting patients. Understanding of quality control and management assurance in a scientific or work-based context. Capacity to develop proficiency in performing routine and complex techniques currently in use during training and the ability to develop and validate new techniques. Awareness of the role of their chosen specialty in healthcare and disease and its application in a healthcare environment. Competent IT skills and familiarity with common software for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and databases. Ability to analyze complex information, including laboratory or workshop data, images, and clinical details, using knowledge gained through study and experience to formulate appropriate advice and judgments.

Under supervision, develop good interpretative skills to provide advice to multidisciplinary team members regarding diagnosis and appropriate patient treatment. Ability to handle patient samples, hazardous reagents, and chemicals safely, in compliance with Health and Safety regulations. Capacity to work under pressure, demonstrating emotional resilience and the ability to prioritize and plan work effectively. Uphold the values and principles of the NHS Constitution, with a focus on patient-centered care.

Essential Criteria

Ability to perform a wide range of duties as outlined in the Job Description. Highly developed coordination skills with good dexterity and hand-eye coordination necessary for performing fine analytical techniques. Ability to meet the travel requirements associated with the training role and clinical rotations.
