Job Overview
In collaboration with the assigned Training Coordinator/Officer, the Junior Clinical Scientist Trainee will take charge of their own development throughout the training program. This includes fulfilling the learning objectives specified in the Learning Guides, gaining hands-on experience in NHS scientific departments, and pursuing a complementary academic master's program at an accredited Higher Education Institution.
The Junior Clinical Scientist is expected to adhere to the operational policies and procedures of the host department and the NHS organization, maintaining high standards of professionalism, health and safety, confidentiality, and respect for diversity as outlined in the NHS Constitution.
This position is a fixed-term role lasting three years, during which the trainee will engage in a full-time program that combines practical learning with a part-time academic master's course. The curriculum will follow the guidelines provided on the NSHCS website.
Key Responsibilities
The trainee will participate in the comprehensive training program, progressing through various modules. This will involve learning to perform and interpret clinical and specialized scientific processes, supported by both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Key responsibilities include:
- Executing complex scientific and clinical tasks, including direct patient interactions.
- Analyzing and interpreting clinical data and investigative options.
- Making informed judgments, including clinical decisions based on complex information affecting patient care.
- Initiating and engaging in innovation, improvements, and research and development activities, while also contributing to the education of other healthcare science trainees and learners in the workplace.
The trainee is expected to complete all practical training and assessments alongside the academic master's course, ultimately qualifying for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and earning the title of Clinical Scientist. Additionally, they will gain experience in effectively communicating complex technical and scientific information to colleagues in both verbal and written formats.
Trainees must meet the HCPC's standards for training, professional skills, behavior, and health.
Detailed Responsibilities
- Conduct a variety of clinical and scientific investigations relevant to the role, including processing blood and other samples, performing direct clinical measurements, and handling procedures involving ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
- Maintain a high level of professional competence in all tests and investigations performed.
- Interpret and act on test results in accordance with departmental policies and quality systems.
- Provide feedback on new proposals and protocols, particularly for service enhancements.
- Offer guidance to medical, nursing, and other healthcare staff on the safe and optimal use of scientific procedures and complex equipment.
- Assist in the procurement and utilization of medical devices and consumables.
- Ensure the safe operation of complex scientific and medical equipment, documenting all maintenance and calibration activities.
- Utilize reagents and hazardous materials safely, adhering to Health and Safety policies.
- Engage in risk management procedures, including risk assessments and reporting adverse incidents.
- Participate in audits and quality assurance processes.
- Conduct research and development activities as part of the training, acquiring relevant skills for clinical audits.
- Support the training and supervision of junior staff and students, participating in departmental seminars and scientific meetings to share knowledge gained through study or research.
Qualifications and Skills
Essential Criteria
- Evidence of research experience, such as a higher degree or equivalent scientific capability, is desirable.
- Candidates for specific posts must hold relevant professional registrations.
- In-service applicants may apply without the above degree requirements if they meet additional criteria outlined on the NSHCS website.
