Position Overview

The Junior Clinical Scientist Trainee will engage in a structured training program under the guidance of a designated Training Coordinator/Officer. This role involves taking ownership of their development throughout the training process, fulfilling the outlined learning objectives, and gaining practical experience within NHS scientific departments while pursuing a complementary academic master's program at an accredited Higher Education Institution.

Throughout the training period, the Trainee is expected to adhere to the standard operating procedures and policies of the host department and NHS organization, maintaining professionalism, health and safety, confidentiality, and respect for diversity as outlined in the NHS Constitution.

The Junior Clinical Scientist Trainee will be employed on a fixed-term basis for three years, during which they will participate in a comprehensive full-time training program that integrates work-based learning with a part-time master's degree curriculum, as specified on the NSHCS website.

Key Responsibilities

The trainee will undertake the complete training curriculum to progress through the various modules of the program. This includes learning to perform and interpret clinical and specialized scientific processes, supported by both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Key responsibilities include:

  • Executing complex scientific and clinical tasks, including direct patient interactions.
  • Analyzing and interpreting investigative and clinical options.
  • Making informed clinical judgments based on complex data and situations affecting patient care.
  • Initiating and participating in innovation, improvement, and research and development activities, as well as contributing to the education of other healthcare science trainees and learners in the workplace.

The trainee will be expected to complete all work-based training and assessments alongside the academic master's course, ultimately achieving eligibility for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the use of the protected title of Clinical Scientist. Additionally, they will gain experience in effectively communicating complex technical and scientific information to colleagues in both verbal and written formats.

Trainees must meet the HCPC's standards for training, professional skills, behavior, and health.

Detailed Responsibilities

  • Conduct a variety of clinical and scientific investigations relevant to the role, including processing samples and performing direct clinical measurements.
  • Maintain a high level of professional competence in all tests and investigations performed.
  • Interpret and act on results in accordance with departmental policies and quality systems.
  • Provide feedback on new proposals and protocols, particularly for service enhancements.
  • Offer guidance to medical and nursing staff on the safe and effective use of scientific procedures and complex equipment.
  • Assist in the procurement and utilization of medical devices and consumables.
  • Ensure the safe operation of scientific and medical equipment, documenting maintenance and calibration activities.
  • Utilize reagents and hazardous materials safely, adhering to Health and Safety regulations.
  • Engage in risk management processes, including assessments and incident reporting.
  • Participate in internal and external audits and quality assurance processes.
  • Contribute to research and development initiatives within the department as part of the training.
  • Support the training and supervision of support staff and new appointees, participating in departmental seminars and meetings to share knowledge.
