Position Overview

The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the distribution of medications across various healthcare settings, including pharmacies, wards, and community clinics.

This role involves the systematic receipt and verification of pharmaceutical supplies as well as the preparation and dispensing of medications.

As a member of the Pharmacy Team, the individual will contribute to a diverse array of pharmaceutical services provided by the Trust to its patients and clients. All tasks will be executed in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and under the guidance of the Head of Pharmacy. Key interactions will include patients and their families, pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, ward managers, nursing staff, physicians, procurement personnel, porters, and the UHB Pharmacy.

Key Responsibilities

The individual will be integral to the Pharmacy Team, delivering a comprehensive suite of pharmaceutical services on behalf of the Trust. Responsibilities will include:

  • Engaging in the daily supply of stock to wards, including controlled substances, while ensuring effective communication between the Pharmacy and the relevant units.
  • Receiving and verifying deliveries of pharmaceutical products.
  • Preparing supply orders for community clinics.
  • Dispensing controlled medications upon request from clinical areas, ensuring compliance with departmental protocols and legal requirements.
  • Maintaining and replenishing emergency supplies for out-of-hours services, conducting daily stock assessments, and monitoring storage conditions.
  • Overseeing the management of emergency medications on wards, including tracking expiration dates for timely replacements.
  • Storing and distributing medications according to manufacturer and local guidelines, ensuring proper stock rotation and environmental conditions.
  • Evaluating surplus medications returned from clinical areas for potential re-use.
  • Disposing of waste materials in line with Trust policies, including the safe handling of hazardous substances.
  • Participating in regular reviews of stock lists to minimize waste and ensure adequate medication supply.
  • Issuing and supplying stock items daily, ensuring compliance with quality standards.
  • Identifying stock shortages and placing orders as necessary, communicating with relevant staff regarding urgency.
  • Interpreting and dispensing prescriptions accurately under the supervision of a pharmacist or checking technician.
  • Inputting prescription data into the pharmacy information system with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Utilizing effective communication techniques to assist patients with medication inquiries and ensuring their understanding.
  • Managing personal workload in coordination with the manager to ensure efficient dispensary operations.
  • Completing mandatory training and assessments to demonstrate ongoing competency in dispensing practices.
  • Maintaining departmental security at all times.
