Position: SEMH Teaching Assistant

Teaching Personnel is seeking a committed SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to support students in a secondary educational setting rated 'Good' by Ofsted. This full-time role involves working closely with students facing various challenges related to their social and emotional well-being.

Role Summary:

As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, your primary responsibility will be to assist students in overcoming their emotional and mental health difficulties. You will collaborate with educators, Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs), and other support personnel to foster a nurturing and encouraging atmosphere conducive to both academic and personal growth.

Key Duties:

  • Individualized Support: Provide tailored assistance to students with SEMH needs, facilitating their emotional management, resilience building, and engagement in learning activities.
  • Behavioral Guidance: Aid in the execution of personalized behavior strategies, utilizing positive reinforcement to promote appropriate conduct and mitigate conflicts.
  • Social and Emotional Growth: Assist students in enhancing their social competencies, emotional control, and self-esteem through mentoring and targeted interventions.
  • Classroom Support: Collaborate with teachers to adapt instructional materials and lesson plans, ensuring accessibility for students with SEMH requirements and fostering an inclusive classroom environment.
  • Monitoring Progress: Maintain comprehensive records of student development, focusing on emotional and behavioral progress to inform support strategies and facilitate communication with the educational team.
  • Engagement with Families: Partner with parents and guardians to provide updates on student progress and develop collaborative strategies for supporting students at home and in school.
  • Team Collaboration: Work alongside the SENCO, educators, and external organizations to ensure a unified approach to supporting students with SEMH needs, playing a crucial role in their educational journey.

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working with youth, especially those with SEMH challenges, is highly preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to establish trusting relationships with students and colleagues.
  • A composed, patient, and empathetic demeanor, capable of handling challenging situations effectively.
  • Familiarity with strategies for supporting students with SEMH needs, including behavioral management and emotional literacy techniques.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within a team, demonstrating flexibility in addressing student needs.
  • A sincere commitment to aiding young individuals in overcoming obstacles to their educational and personal development.
