Position: SEMH Teaching Assistant

Teaching Personnel is seeking a committed SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to work in a secondary school rated 'Good' by Ofsted. This full-time role involves supporting students with SEMH challenges and is an excellent opportunity for those passionate about education and mental health.

Role Summary:

As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will be instrumental in assisting students who encounter social, emotional, and mental health difficulties. Collaborating closely with educators, SENCOs (Special Educational Needs Coordinators), and other support personnel, you will help foster a supportive and encouraging atmosphere conducive to both academic and personal growth.

Key Duties:

  • Individualized Support: Provide tailored assistance to students with SEMH requirements, helping them navigate their emotions, enhance resilience, and engage in their educational pursuits.
  • Behavioral Guidance: Aid in the execution of personalized behavior strategies, employing positive reinforcement techniques to promote suitable conduct and mitigate potential disputes.
  • Emotional and Social Growth: Facilitate the development of social skills, emotional regulation, and self-esteem among students. This may involve mentoring, coaching, or implementing specific interventions tailored to individual needs.
  • Classroom Support: Collaborate with teachers to adapt lesson plans and materials, ensuring accessibility for students with SEMH challenges. This includes providing focused assistance during lessons and contributing to an inclusive classroom setting.
  • Monitoring Progress: Maintain comprehensive records of student development, including emotional and behavioral progress. Utilize this data to refine support strategies and communicate effectively with the broader educational team.
  • Engagement with Families: Work in partnership with parents and guardians, offering updates on student progress and collaborating on strategies to support learning both at school and at home.
  • Team Collaboration: Work alongside the SENCO, educators, and external organizations to ensure a unified approach to supporting students with SEMH needs. Your role will be vital in ensuring that all students receive the necessary support to thrive.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with young individuals, particularly those facing SEMH challenges, is highly advantageous.
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities, fostering trust with students and colleagues.
  • A composed, patient, and empathetic demeanor, capable of handling challenging situations effectively.
  • Understanding of strategies to assist students with SEMH needs, including behavior management and emotional literacy techniques.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively, with a flexible approach to addressing student needs.
  • A sincere commitment to supporting young people in overcoming obstacles to their educational and personal development.
