Shrewsbury, Shropshire, United Kingdom The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust Full time

Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity exists for a Forensic Medical Officer to become part of the Medical Examiner service at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. This role is pivotal as we enhance our service to encompass the examination of fatalities from the non-acute sector of our healthcare community.

Your primary responsibility will be to support Medical Examiners in conducting independent evaluations of deceased patients' medical documentation to assess the quality of care provided and determine the cause of death. You will serve as a vital resource for bereaved families, healthcare professionals, and coroner and registration services.

The nature of this position necessitates a commitment to high ethical standards. Strong interpersonal skills are essential, as you will need to demonstrate empathy and handle sensitive situations with bereaved families while upholding professional integrity.

We have two openings available, with one position located at one hospital and the other at a different facility. However, candidates should be prepared to work at either site as required to fulfill the service's needs and should have reliable transportation arrangements in place.

Main Responsibilities

Your key duties will include:

  • Investigating the circumstances surrounding individual patient deaths by performing initial reviews of medical records to gather clinical and contextual information, and sourcing additional details as necessary for the medical examiner's scrutiny.
  • Identifying cases that necessitate referral to the Coroner and discussing these situations with bereaved relatives to explain the rationale behind such referrals.
  • Assisting in the identification of cases for evaluation by the Structured Judgement Review team, Clinical Governance teams, and the Learning Disability Review Teams.
  • Engaging with relatives of the deceased to discuss the probable content of the medical certificate of cause of death, while collecting supplementary information as needed. This may involve conveying sensitive information and providing explanations, with full support from the Medical Examiner and lead MEO.
  • Ensuring that any concerns raised by relatives are addressed promptly and directed to the appropriate support services, such as Patient Safety or Patient Experience, for further investigation or assistance.

Work Environment

This role may expose you to distressing and sensitive details. The position of Forensic Medical Officer can be demanding, requiring resilience and the ability to manage a substantial workload under pressure.

About Our Team

The Medical Examiner Office comprises a team of skilled and dedicated professionals committed to supporting families following the loss of a loved one. Joining our small, friendly team means you will be part of an environment that prioritizes mutual support. You will collaborate with staff at all levels and various internal and external stakeholders, allowing you to build relationships across departments and enhance your knowledge, skills, and experience.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential Skills:

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to communicate effectively in challenging and emotional situations with empathy and professionalism.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and manage a fluctuating workload amidst competing priorities.
  • Proficiency in IT software systems, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, while handling sensitive personal identifiable information.

Personal Attributes:

  • Self-motivated and proactive, with the capability to step in for senior MEOs at short notice.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • A genuine passion for enhancing the patient experience.

Educational Background:

  • Degree-level education or equivalent practical knowledge.
  • Completion of e-learning MEO core training modules.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Familiarity with clinical and medical terminology.
  • Experience working with individuals in sensitive and emotional circumstances, particularly those who are recently bereaved.
  • Experience in a healthcare environment, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across organizational boundaries.

Desirable Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the Coroner and Justice Act 2009 in relation to the Medical Examiner System.
  • A clinical background in nursing or a related discipline.
