Medical Examiner Officer

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Medical Examiner Officer to join our team at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. As a Medical Examiner Officer, you will play a critical role in supporting the Medical Examiner service in reviewing patient deaths and ensuring that families receive the support and care they need during a difficult time.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct preliminary reviews of medical records to identify clinical and circumstantial information related to patient deaths.
- Assist in highlighting cases that require referral to the Coroner and discuss with bereaved relatives why this might be necessary.
- Discuss likely content of medical certificate of cause of death with relatives of deceased patients and collect additional information as needed.
- Ensure any concerns raised by relatives are dealt with in a timely manner and forwarded to the appropriate support service.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively in difficult and emotional situations.
- Ability to work as part of a team and organize fluctuating workload around competing priorities.
- Competent in the use of IT software systems, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Proactive and self-motivated with the ability to deputize for senior MEOs as needed.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Passion for improving patient experience.
- Educated to degree level or equivalent working knowledge.
- Completed e-learning MEO core training modules.
- Counselling qualification.
- Working knowledge of clinical and medical terminology.
- Experience of working with people in sensitive and emotional situations.
- Experience of working in a healthcare setting with multi-disciplinary teams across organizational boundaries.
