Clinical Lead for Inpatient Care Services

Position Overview
At St Raphael's Hospice, we are dedicated to providing exceptional care to our patients in a nurturing environment. We are currently seeking a Clinical Lead for our Inpatient Unit (IPU) who is passionate about making a significant impact in the lives of those with life-limiting conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the continuous enhancement of clinical practices and ensure high standards of care within the IPU, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop relevant policies and guidelines.
- Stay informed about advancements and innovations in specialist palliative care.
- Exemplify leadership by promoting effective communication across disciplines.
- Provide expert clinical guidance, ensuring the delivery of top-tier nursing care and clinical excellence to patients and their families.
- Create a supportive and positive work atmosphere, encouraging staff initiative and evidence-based practices.
Clinical Duties
- Exhibit clinical excellence and maintain high nursing standards in specialist palliative care, serving as a resource and role model for colleagues.
- Work autonomously and collaboratively, applying advanced assessment skills and non-medical prescribing within established protocols.
- Maintain open communication with all members of the healthcare team.
- Share responsibility for the IPU environment, reflecting the hospice's vision and values.
- Mentor student nurses and newly registered nurses during their placements in the IPU.
- Ensure compliance with drug administration policies and maintain patient confidentiality.
- Supervise IPU volunteers and uphold high standards of nursing documentation.
- Demonstrate awareness of safeguarding protocols and reporting processes.
Management Responsibilities
- Provide visible and accessible leadership for nursing and administrative staff in the IPU.
- Conduct regular team meetings to support staff development and communication.
- Act as the first line manager for senior staff nurses, offering guidance and conducting performance evaluations.
- Organize and lead IPU meetings to ensure effective information dissemination.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels and skill mix based on patient needs.
- Participate in the recruitment and onboarding of new staff members.
- Support the advancement of IT systems within the IPU.
- Engage in various departmental meetings to contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
- Assist in crisis management to maintain safe staffing levels in the IPU.
- Act in the absence of the Clinical Director, collaborating with management as needed.
Strategic Responsibilities
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare landscape and relevant legislation affecting specialist palliative care.
- Maintain regular communication with stakeholders to foster relationships that align with the hospice's management objectives.
- Collaborate with other hospices to enhance partnership opportunities and influence funding streams.
Qualifications and Skills
Essential:
- Professional Registration.
- Completion of a Degree, preferably at the Master's level.
- Leadership experience at Band 7 or above in a hospice, oncology, community, or acute care setting.
- Ability to inspire and lead a team effectively.
- Experience in initiating service improvements with measurable outcomes.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and training.
- Strong understanding of specialist palliative care principles.
- Advanced assessment skills and knowledge of current clinical issues.
- Understanding of governance, audit, and research processes.
- Excellent communication and time management skills.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and demonstrate sensitivity and compassion.
- Good health and attendance record.
Desirable:
- Non-medical prescriber qualification.
- Publications in healthcare journals.
- Experience presenting at national conferences.
- Completion of mentorship or preceptorship courses.
- Experience in audit or research.
