Position Overview

At St Raphael's Hospice, we are committed to providing exceptional care in our Inpatient Unit (IPU), and we are seeking a dedicated Clinical Lead to join our team.

Key Responsibilities

The Clinical Lead for the Inpatient Unit will collaborate closely with senior management and play a vital role in the leadership and advancement of the IPU services. This position requires an experienced clinical practitioner who will be instrumental in refining clinical practices, ensuring ongoing quality enhancement, and integrating the hospice's clinical governance framework. Additionally, the role involves innovating and supporting new operational methods that promote a more efficient and patient-centered service.

Core Duties Include:

  • Champion the continuous development of exemplary clinical practices and high standards of care within the IPU, including the formulation of policies, procedures, and guidelines in partnership with multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Stay informed about evolving practices and innovations in specialist palliative care.
  • Lead by example, fostering and maintaining excellent interdisciplinary communication.
  • Exhibit a high level of clinical expertise, guiding the Inpatient team to ensure the delivery of superior nursing care and clinical excellence to patients and their families.
  • Create a supportive, open, and positive environment for staff, encouraging initiative and facilitating evidence-based practice.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate clinical excellence and maintain high nursing standards within the realm of specialist palliative care, serving as a resource and role model for colleagues.
  • Practice both independently and collaboratively, utilizing advanced physical assessment skills and non-medical prescribing within an agreed scope of practice.
  • Maintain effective communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Share responsibility with Band 6 nurses for the IPU environment, reflecting the hospice's vision and values.
  • Provide mentorship for student nurses and newly registered nurses during their educational placements in the IPU.
  • Ensure the safe custody and administration of medications in accordance with hospice policies and legal requirements.
  • Support and supervise volunteers working within the IPU.
  • Uphold high standards of nursing documentation and confidentiality regarding patient information.
  • Exhibit a thorough understanding of safeguarding, including risk assessment and reporting processes.

Management Responsibilities

  • Provide visible and accessible professional leadership for the nursing and administrative staff in the IPU.
  • Conduct regular team meetings and one-on-one sessions to support staff development.
  • Act as the first line manager for Band 6 senior staff nurses, offering guidance and conducting performance reviews.
  • Organize and facilitate regular IPU meetings to ensure effective communication among staff.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels and skill mix, considering patient acuity and effective use of nursing resources.
  • Participate in the recruitment, selection, and onboarding of new staff.
  • Support the advancement of IT systems within the IPU.
  • Engage in meetings related to departmental leadership, quality improvement, and health and safety.
  • Participate in crisis management for the IPU when staffing levels are deemed unsafe.
  • Act as a deputy for the Clinical Director in their absence.

Strategic Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the contemporary healthcare landscape and relevant legislation affecting specialist palliative care.
  • Maintain regular communication with internal and external stakeholders to foster relationships that support the hospice's management plan.
  • Collaborate with counterparts in other hospices to enhance partnership working and influence funding streams.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Professional Registration.
  • Completion of a Degree, preferably at the Master's level.
  • Experience in leadership or management roles at Band 7 or above in a hospice, oncology, community, or acute care setting for end-of-life patients.
  • Ability to inspire and lead a team effectively.
  • Experience in initiating service improvements with measurable outcomes.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and mandatory training.
  • Strong understanding of specialist palliative care.
  • Advanced physical assessment skills.
  • Knowledge of current clinical and professional issues in palliative care.
  • Understanding of governance, audit, and research processes.
  • Commitment to personal learning and development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Understanding of risk management, health and safety, and infection control.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and compassion.
  • Good health and attendance record.

Desirable:

  • Non-medical prescriber.
  • Publications in healthcare journals.
  • Presentations or poster submissions at a national level.
  • Completion of a mentorship or preceptorship course.
  • Experience in audit or research.
