Key Responsibilities

Within our acute hospital environment, there are dedicated wards focused on the Care of Older Persons, alongside various outlier services across other medical departments. Our rehabilitation unit is situated in a scenic coastal area, enhancing the recovery experience for our patients. The Division is proud to offer an innovative Community Frailty Service, designed to support our vulnerable local population in their own homes. Recently, we have established a dedicated Acute Frailty Unit, which operates in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams from acute, community, and social care sectors. Our services for the older population encompass a range of specialties, including Parkinson's Disease management, ortho geriatrics, and mental health support.

Job Duties

As a member of our medical consultant team, you will be supported by junior and trainee medical staff, along with various clinical support teams. Our multidisciplinary team in Geriatric Medicine is known for its dedication and collaborative spirit, working towards the advancement of frailty and geriatric services within the Trust. We aim to enhance patient outcomes by improving the assessment process for frail patients at the point of entry.

Candidate Profile

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP)
  • Completion of higher training in General (Internal) Medicine and Geriatric Medicine as required for CCT or CESR
  • Progression towards Specialist Registrar status within the required timeframe

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualifications (MD, PhD, MSc)
  • Formal training in medical education

Experience and Skills

Essential

  • Comprehensive experience in general and geriatric medicine within the UK healthcare system.
  • Proficiency in managing a wide range of acute medical conditions.
  • Capability to independently oversee patient care.
  • Strong practical clinical skills.
  • Competence in Intermediate Life Support.

Desirable

  • Competence in Advanced Life Support.

Skills and Abilities

  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, capable of handling challenging situations.
  • Basic management training.
  • Understanding of clinical governance within the healthcare context.

  • Evidence of involvement in audit processes leading to improvements.
  • Understanding of research methodologies.
  • Awareness of current developments in the specialty.
  • Commitment to obtaining NIHR Good Clinical Practice certification.
