This is an exciting opportunity to join the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals team as we initiate a significant transformation in our service delivery model, aimed at enhancing care for our patients and their families within our Integrated Care System.

Key Responsibilities

Within our acute hospital framework, we have dedicated wards focused on the Care of Older Persons, complemented by additional resources across various medical units. Our Trust is also home to a rehabilitation facility located in a coastal town. We take pride in our innovative Community Frailty Service, which extends support to our elderly population in their residences, alongside our newly established Acute Frailty Unit, which is bolstered by collaborative efforts from acute, community, and social care multidisciplinary teams. Services for the Older Person encompass specialties such as Parkinson's Disease management, Ortho geriatrics, and Older Adult Mental Health in-reach. Recent advancements have also been made in our Emergency Department and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).

Role Expectations

As a member of our medical consultant team, you will be supported by junior and trainee medical professionals. Additionally, you will collaborate with a variety of clinical support teams through a multidisciplinary approach to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Our Geriatric Medicine team is known for its motivation and camaraderie, and we aim to enhance our services by focusing on the assessment of frail patients at the initial point of care, thereby improving overall patient outcomes.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP)
  • Completion of higher training in General (Internal) Medicine and Geriatric Medicine as required for Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
  • Entry onto the Specialist Registrar or a UK SpR within 6 months of CCT or significant progress towards CESR

Desirable

  • Postgraduate degree (MD, PhD, MSc)
  • Formal qualification in medical education

Skills and Competencies

Essential

  • Comprehensive exposure to general and geriatric medicine within the UK healthcare system.
  • Ability to provide expert clinical assessments across a wide range of acute medical conditions, including emergencies.
  • Capacity to independently manage the clinical care of patients.
  • Proficient practical clinical skills.
  • Competency in Intermediate Life Support.

Desirable

  • Competency in Advanced Life Support.

Communication and Leadership Skills

Essential

  • Exceptional oral and written communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in effective communication in English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the capability to navigate challenging situations.
  • Basic management training.
  • Understanding of management principles within the healthcare context, including clinical governance.
  • Ability to manage risk and make end-of-life decisions.
  • Evidence of strong organizational and leadership capabilities.
  • Experience in mentoring junior trainees, medical students, and Allied Health Professionals.
  • Demonstrated involvement in audit work leading to improvements.
  • Familiarity with research methodologies.
  • Awareness of current developments and initiatives within the specialty.
  • Current or planned attainment of National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Good Clinical Practice certification.
