Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

The Department dedicated to the care of the elderly offers a holistic approach to managing older patients in both hospital and community environments. Our focus is on enhancing the quality of life for older individuals experiencing frailty.

At our facility, the geriatric specialty has expanded significantly, particularly with the establishment of a leading fractured neck of femur service in Europe, alongside a comprehensive Older Person Assessment and Liaison (OPAL) service that provides essential care at the point of entry and a Frailty Same Day Emergency Care (FSDEC) service. We are looking to welcome additional, motivated Senior Geriatric Consultants to join our innovative team. We are open to various subspecialty interests, with a particular emphasis on peri-operative geriatrics, movement disorders, and acute geriatric care.

Our organization prioritizes the well-being of its staff, allowing for flexible working arrangements even though the roles consist of 10 programmed activities.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Geriatric Consultant, you will:

  • Collaborate with a well-established team of geriatricians to enhance patient experiences during hospital stays.
  • Engage in service development initiatives aimed at creating an acute admissions assessment unit for frail older adults.
  • Participate in the OPAL service, which involves a multidisciplinary team providing Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) in the Emergency Department and medical assessment units.
  • Contribute to the development of community services linked to Intermediate Care centers and establish a rapid access clinic for early reviews of community-based patients to minimize hospital admissions.
  • Provide a liaison Orthogeriatric service, benefiting from a centralized fractured neck of femur service, one of the largest in Europe, to enhance orthogeriatric services.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary falls and osteoporosis clinics, with opportunities to develop additional specialized clinics if qualified.
  • Deliver same-day emergency care for patients over 70 through the Frailty SDEC service, ensuring timely specialist input and facilitating early discharge.

About Our Organization

We are recognized as a leading NHS Foundation Trust in the UK, dedicated to the vision of Building Healthier Lives. We understand that achieving this vision requires exceptional staff.

Our commitment to our employees includes:

  • Investing in their health and well-being, with a focus on flexible working arrangements.
  • Providing a diverse range of training and development opportunities to support personal and professional growth.

We strive to create an inclusive environment where all staff feel valued and empowered to reach their full potential. Our commitment to equity and inclusion is reflected at all organizational levels, supported by active staff networks and initiatives aimed at fostering a culture of respect and belonging.

We are a smoke-free organization, committed to promoting a healthy workplace.

Clinical Responsibilities

As a Senior Geriatric Consultant, your clinical duties will include:

  • Providing care for inpatients.
  • Managing administrative responsibilities related to patient care.
  • Contributing to educational activities for undergraduate and postgraduate training, including allied health professionals as part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Participating in departmental and directorate meetings regularly.
  • Engaging in research projects with support from the organization.
  • Providing cover for colleagues during periods of leave as per trust policy.
  • Assisting the department and trust during emergencies.
  • Participating in on-call commitments for acute medicine and specialty as required.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Registration with the GMC and CCST in geriatric and general internal medicine or equivalent within six months of interview.
