Overview

We are looking for a skilled and compassionate Geriatric Medicine Consultant to become a vital part of our healthcare team at St Andrew's Healthcare. This role is centered around delivering high-quality medical care to older adults within secure mental health environments.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

  • Provide expert medical evaluations, diagnoses, and treatments tailored for older patients in secure inpatient settings.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to create and implement personalized care plans that address both physical and mental health needs.
  • Conduct regular assessments, patient reviews, and family consultations to manage complex medical situations effectively.
  • Offer specialized guidance to mental health professionals, ensuring cohesive care for patients with dual medical and mental health challenges.

Leadership and Management:

  • Oversee and guide a team of healthcare professionals, focusing on the care of older adults in secure environments.
  • Promote effective communication and teamwork within the multidisciplinary group to enhance patient care.
  • Engage in clinical governance activities, including audits and quality improvement projects aimed at the geriatric population.
  • Support the development and execution of policies related to geriatric care in mental health settings.
  • Provide mentorship and training to junior medical staff, fostering best practices in geriatric healthcare.

Collaboration:

  • Work alongside psychiatry, neurology, and social services to ensure comprehensive care for older adults with mental health conditions.
  • Coordinate with external agencies to guarantee continuity of care after discharge, facilitating smooth transitions for patients.
  • Engage with families to provide education and support regarding health issues affecting older adults.

Research and Development:

  • Participate in research initiatives relevant to geriatric medicine and its intersection with mental health.
  • Stay informed about the latest advancements in geriatric care, particularly within secure mental health contexts.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Medical degree with full GMC registration.
  • CCT in Geriatric Medicine or equivalent qualifications.
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP or FRCP) or equivalent.
  • Significant experience in managing medical conditions in older adults, especially in mental health settings.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management capabilities in a healthcare environment.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team focused on integrated care.
