Position Overview

Stantec is engaged in some of the most significant and intricate hydropower initiatives globally. We are expanding rapidly and are in search of a Principal Electrical Engineer to contribute to our innovative team, focusing on the design and advancement of state-of-the-art hydropower and pumped storage hydro systems. This position offers flexibility in location across the UK.

Key Responsibilities

In this pivotal role, you will be involved in every phase of hydropower projects, from initial feasibility assessments and conceptual design to construction and final commissioning. Your primary responsibility will be to lead the electrical engineering design aspects of these projects, which encompass generators, control and instrumentation systems, protection mechanisms, substations, and transmission lines. You will conduct design work, modeling, and analysis of electrical and electronic systems to ensure project viability and adherence to industry standards.

As a Principal Engineer, you will also take on line management duties for certain team members, support business development initiatives, and take ownership of project deliverables.

Collaboration with our expanding transmission and distribution sector will provide opportunities to engage in significant grid enhancement projects, including the design and implementation of new transmission lines and substations.

You will offer technical mentorship to junior engineers and work alongside civil, mechanical, and other engineering disciplines to ensure a cohesive project design.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will hold Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status with the IET. Experience with large rotating machinery (generators or motors) is essential. While specific experience in hydro and/or pumped storage hydro systems is highly desirable, it is not mandatory. Electrical experience in other sectors, particularly within the Energy and Water domains, is beneficial.

You should be proficient in producing and interpreting design documentation, including single line diagrams, key line diagrams, block cable diagrams, equipment sizing calculations, load schedules, specifications, and reports. Familiarity with collaborative design reviews and solution development is expected.

Strong communication skills are necessary for delivering technical presentations to clients and collaborating with other design engineers during technical workshops.
