Position: Employee Relations Adviser

Location: Cambridge or London, UK (Hybrid - 3 days in office)

About the job

With overall responsibility for all Employee Relations ("ER") case load within the UK, the Employee Relations Adviser will deliver a highly-effective and efficient ER service to the business, providing managers and other senior colleagues with expert advice and guidance on people-related issues. This will include building and maintaining collaborative relationships with the People team and key stakeholders across the business, reporting on volumes and case status periodically and escalating serious issues to the local HRBP team.

This role may also on occasion support the wider EMEA HR team, where necessary e.g due to capacity, annual leave etc., the Employee Relations Adviser will work with the UK HRBP team to hand over case work to ensure timely and effective delivery of situation management.

Responsibilities


• Provide managers with a full case management, advisory service, and administrative support on all ER issues. This includes providing employment law advice and best practice guidance, highlighting applicable internal policies and proposing commercial interventions and solutions whilst ensuring fairness and consistency.


• Oversee and manage cases to conclusion and track case progression.


• Ensure organisational risk around people activities is managed and mitigated.


• Work closely with line managers to ensure that they are equipped to lead on disciplinary and grievance processes, including the conducting of robust investigations.


• Support line managers on preparation and meetings on performance management including formal PIPs and timely informal interventions.


• Advise and support stakeholders to manage employee absence in a timely and consistent manner, promoting the use of effective return to work meetings.


• Work with managers and employees on longer-term sickness absence or recurrent conditions and support on return to work guidance (inc. phased returns & reasonable adjustments, if applicable).


• Support HRBPs in business change activities e.g. restructuring, transfer (TUPE), redundancies and the drafting of settlement agreements.


• Support colleagues and line managers through the family friendly policies - maternity leave, shared parental leave, flexible working requests etc.


• Work with line managers to support the personal needs of colleagues whilst enabling them to flourish at work.


• Working with the HRBPs and CoEs, boost the capability and knowledge of line managers in dealing with ER-related issues by providing advice, training/upskilling and developing effective toolkits and guidelines to support.


• Undertake self-directed learning to stay updated and informed on legislative changes, case law, and policy & procedure revisions to ensure that guidance and policy advice is always current and accurate.


• Work in partnership with the HRBPs to identify ER solutions that will continuously improve the process management of ER challenges across the business.


• Manage the maintenance of all Company UK ER-related policies and procedures ensuring that they comply with current legislation, best practice and inclusivity.


• Proactively share legislative developments and new learnings with HRBP team.


• Assist the legal function on UK Employment Tribunal / European Labour Court cases through the provision of timely and accurate information and documentation.


• Raise Procurement requests/POs to manage legal expenses incurred through settlement agreements etc.


• Work with Finance to ensure any associated costs and payments are correctly accounted for.


• Support the roll out and development of Service Now ER functionality.

The above is not an exhaustive list of duties and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by your changing role within the organisation and the overall business objectives of the organisation.

Skills & Qualifications


• Excellent understanding and application of employment legislation with the ability to provide expert advice and training.


• Native or bilingual fluency in English (oral and written).


• Strong communication and listening skills, being comfortable in coaching, advising and influencing managers at all levels on ER and associated issues.


• Excellent written communication skills and ability to adapt guidance to meet needs of audience.


• Ability to assess risks and make astute and fair recommendations that meet the needs of the business.


• Strong organisational skills with a demonstrable ability to plan, prioritise and work under pressure whilst ensuring sound attention to detail.


• Solid analytical skills to provide monthly metric data on all ER cases, ER trends and ER solutions and present to the business.


• Demonstrable knowledge of UK employment legislation.


• Evidenced experience in an ER advisory role.

Desirable but not essential


• CIPD Level 5+ qualified or working towards the qualification (or equivalent).


• Knowledge of legislation in the Republic of Ireland.


• Experience of working in a global business within a complex matrix organisation.


• Coaching capability.
