Can you do it?We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and passionate individual to cover a 6-month period of leave from December 2024 to May 2025 inclusive. This would suit someone looking for a secondment opportunity. The key responsibilities are;
  • Overseeing the delivery of the UK Biobank Participant Involvement Strategy, which sets out our plans to develop an expanded and embedded programme of participant involvement for UK Biobank.
  • Supervising the process of recruiting UK Biobank participants and family members to advisory groups, as necessary, to ensure a diversity of voices are represented. 
  • Working with UK Biobank colleagues to develop a programme of meetings and activities for the Participant Advisory Group and other advisory panels to facilitate their meaningful input on a range of UK Biobank activities.
  • Ensuring participant and patient contributors are supported, respected and well-informed to enable them to contribute effectively.
  • Planning and organising other participant, patient and public involvement and engagement activities as required to support UK Biobank projects, such as community engagement initiatives.
  • Raising awareness of the value of participant, patient and public involvement internally across the UK Biobank organisation.
  • Overseeing the development and delivery of the annual participant newsletter, and contribute to the development of other participant engagement activities, such as events. 
  • Liaising with the UK Biobank Ethics Advisory Committee and Access Committee regarding issues that concern participants
  • Engaging with relevant external organisations and networks to learn and share best practice.
The post holder will develop good working relationships with many other UK Biobank colleagues, such as those involved in scientific study development, researcher access and senior management. The post holder will line manage a Participant Engagement Officer.

Working hours are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with expected 2 days per week in the office (based out of University of Oxford or Cheadle, Stockport). Part-time working would be considered for the right candidate.
Is this 'you'?Reporting to the Director of Communications , you’ll have experience of;
  • Overseeing and delivering patient/participant and public consultation, involvement and engagement activities in the research, community or healthcare sector, including focus groups, panel discussions and / or workshops.
  • Using a variety of tools to create, deliver, monitor and evaluate public and patient/participant involvement and engagement activities.
  • Best practice in patient, public and participant involvement in research.
  • Developing inclusive activities that involve a diversity of voices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, necessary for building and managing the varied internal and external relationships critical to the role.
  • Excellent organisation, planning and project management skills, including an ability to work to tight timelines, solve unforeseen problems, and manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail, including an ability to communicate complex scientific information to non-specialist audiences.
