Harlow, Essex, United Kingdom The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust Full time

Position Overview

We are pleased to announce a unique opportunity for a Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist to become a pivotal member of our team at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. This role involves a job share arrangement, collaborating with an existing Band 7 therapist, both of whom will work three days a week.

The successful candidate will take charge of the speech and language therapy service, overseeing daily management and providing guidance to junior staff while spearheading the clinical advancement of the service.

The team comprises Band 6 and Band 5 Speech and Language Therapists, a Speech and Language Therapy apprentice, and a part-time therapy assistant.

We deliver an acute inpatient service to our adult wards, alongside inpatient and outpatient adult videofluoroscopy clinics, and are on the verge of launching our FEES service.

This is an exciting period for our department as we aim to expand our services, particularly with the recent addition of a neonatal/paediatric Speech and Language Therapist.

Key Responsibilities

The post holder will be accountable for:

  • Managing the clinical and administrative functions of the speech and language therapy team, ensuring effective monitoring of referrals and prioritization of caseloads in line with service guidelines.
  • Organizing and executing the hospital's speech and language therapy service and its associated caseload efficiently, adhering to service guidelines to provide a fair, responsive, and effective service.
  • Addressing initial verbal complaints with sensitivity, aiming to resolve issues without escalation, while keeping the line manager informed of all incidents and documenting them according to Trust policy.
  • Ensuring compliance with Trust and speech and language therapy policies, and that all procedures are followed diligently.
  • Conducting clinical work with adults facing a variety of acquired communication and swallowing challenges, maintaining a high standard of clinical practice.
