Position Overview

We are pleased to present a permanent opportunity for a Band 8a Clinical Specialist Therapist, responsible for the operational oversight of our emergency services, short-stay assessment units, and the newly established Older Persons Advice and Liaison Unit (OPAL).

Candidates should possess a strong background in acute healthcare and demonstrate the capability to effectively lead an integrated therapy team, focusing on patient assessment and management from initial contact through to complex discharge planning.

This role is offered on a full-time basis, requiring a commitment to maintaining a clinical caseload across a 7-day extended hours schedule.

The successful candidate will become part of a dedicated team comprising 17 professionals, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and support staff at various levels.

We encourage applications from both physiotherapists and occupational therapists who have relevant experience in leading multidisciplinary teams, managing organizational change, and implementing service improvements. Strong communication skills and the ability to handle complex and sensitive information are essential.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide clinical leadership for the therapy team operating within the Emergency Department, Assessment Units, Short Stay Wards, and OPAL.

• Serve as an expert therapist and leader in the domain of frailty, guiding the delivery of patient pathways throughout the hospital.

• Spearhead service transformation initiatives aimed at developing future-ready services focused on frailty and minimizing hospital admissions.

• Act as the primary clinical representative on designated clinical and service development committees and boards.

• Deliver highly specialized care for complex patients, including advanced interventions and management strategies.

• Provide expert training, guidance, and clinical education to service providers, users, and commissioners.

• Assume a clinical leadership role within the therapy department and a professional leadership role for physiotherapy/occupational therapy.

• Ensure accountability for professional AHP clinical standards, guaranteeing that clinical staff possess the necessary skills, knowledge, and competence to maintain high-quality clinical services and foster ongoing professional development in accordance with HCPC standards and best practices.

• Collaborate effectively with managers and clinicians across the Emergency Department, OPAL Unit, Short Stay Wards, and Assessment Units to ensure the achievement of clinical KPIs and to identify, plan, and implement service development opportunities that enhance service activity and financial sustainability.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Degree in physiotherapy or occupational therapy
  • HCPC Registration
  • Extensive postgraduate training in frailty

Desirable:

  • Master's degree in physiotherapy or occupational therapy

Experience Requirements

Essential:

  • Significant postgraduate clinical experience, with a minimum of 2 years in the Emergency Department and frailty context
  • Experience in clinical leadership
  • People management experience, including appraisals and recruitment

Desirable:

  • Prior experience at Band 8a level
  • Change management experience

Skills Required

Essential:

  • Strong problem-solving and time management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Understanding of evidence-based practice and its implementation

Desirable:

  • Experience in skill mix and workforce planning management
