Position Overview

This role is for a Lead Psychological Support Specialist within the Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

The team engages with individuals experiencing a range of mental health challenges, providing essential support, evaluation, and risk assessment while collaborating closely with a diverse multi-disciplinary team.

The team comprises various professionals, including nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, medical practitioners, non-medical prescribers, psychologists, support staff, and nursing associates.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess extensive experience as a psychological assistant and demonstrate the ability to manage complex cases and navigate challenging circumstances.

Key Responsibilities

To facilitate the structured delivery of brief psychological therapeutic interventions.

The successful candidate will contribute to the evolution of this role, including the application of outcome measures and service evaluation. The candidate will support team leaders and other practitioners.

The role involves collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team and assistance with clinically related administrative tasks.

The candidate will employ research skills for auditing, service enhancement, and research initiatives within the service area.

The candidate will compile and share relevant resources.

The role requires fostering and maintaining positive working relationships with clients and external agencies.

The candidate will receive regular (weekly) clinical professional supervision from senior qualified psychologists within the service.

Job Duties

1. Under the guidance of a qualified psychologist, conduct assessments of personality, beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, emotional functioning, and other relevant psychological characteristics that contribute to understanding clients' difficulties. This may involve utilizing standardized psychometric tools, protocol-based assessment instruments, self-report measures, rating scales, and structured interviews as necessary.

2. Collaborate with a qualified psychologist in formulating clients' difficulties and planning and delivering care plans that involve psychological treatment and/or management of clients' issues in community and inpatient settings.

3. Deliver therapeutic interventions developed or guided by a qualified psychologist or defined by protocol for individual clients and families, including structured programs of cognitive-behavioral therapy or other suitable psychological approaches.

4. Assist in the planning, development, coordination, and delivery of therapeutic groups, such as group interventions for managing anxiety, stress, and psycho-educational sessions for caregivers.

5. Act as a co-therapist alongside a qualified psychologist or other designated clinicians, running groups in accordance with agreed protocols.

6. Promote a psychologically informed approach to understanding and managing the needs of all clients within the service area.

7. Collaborate with other members of the multi-disciplinary team in case management and care planning.

8. Attend and contribute to relevant multi-disciplinary meetings, providing psychological insights or information on behalf of the supervising qualified psychologist.

9. Support the team with shift coordination at least twice a month, which involves engaging with distressed individuals and assisting in alleviating their distress or escalating to other teams as necessary.

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • A First or Upper Second honors degree in psychology OR a lower class degree with a postgraduate qualification (Master's degree).
  • Eligibility for graduate membership of the British Psychological Society.

Desirable

  • Additional training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice, autism, personality disorders, and/or research design and analysis.

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience working with individuals in a clinical or supportive environment.
  • Extensive experience with individuals facing severe and enduring mental health challenges.
  • Considerable experience as an assistant psychologist.

Desirable

  • Understanding and experience working with individuals who have experienced trauma.
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary and multi-agency settings.
