The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is seeking skilled Communications Officers to join its initiative aimed at fostering business investment and growth in the UK, while also advocating for workers' rights and delivering results for the workforce.
Our work encompasses a broad spectrum of both domestic and international matters, including the promotion of the UK's trade agreements with various nations, supporting entrepreneurs in their ventures, and managing high-profile media situations such as the significant Post Office Horizon IT controversy.
The roles are diverse and stimulating, with each day presenting new challenges. Responsibilities range from creating impactful press materials to coordinating ministerial engagements and interviews, as well as briefing journalists on unfolding news stories. We are truly at the heart of government communications.
You will collaborate with a vibrant and dedicated press office team, working closely with Special Advisers, Private Office staff, and policy officials on both proactive and reactive media strategies.
Role Responsibilities
As a member of DBT's Communications team, you will engage in developing communication strategies that highlight the UK as an attractive destination for investment, advocate for workers' rights, and manage responses to challenging press inquiries from major publications.
This role offers the opportunity to provide guidance to a new ministerial team regarding media appearances and to identify opportunities for positive press coverage and human-interest narratives from across the UK, aiming to secure favorable stories in consumer media and regional outlets.
This is a unique opportunity to join a department that is pioneering new initiatives as it addresses global challenges and seizes opportunities.
The ideal candidates will be expected to:
- Collaborate with a team to plan and execute communications that resonate both domestically and internationally during ministerial events, including visits, speaking engagements, and interview opportunities.
- Effectively manage reactive inquiries and rebuttals, including briefing senior political and economic journalists to influence upcoming news.
- Create high-quality content for social media platforms on behalf of the Department's ministers and corporate channels.
- Assist with significant announcements and the overall operations of the Press Office, including participating in an on-call duty rota, for which overtime compensation will be provided.
- Monitor and assess media coverage to ensure that objectives are met and that DBT's key messages are effectively communicated to our target audiences.
Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications
- Demonstrated news awareness, exceptional judgment, political insight, and excellent communication skills, both internally and externally.
- Outstanding written English and experience in producing high-quality media content under tight deadlines across various modern media platforms.
- Experience working in a fast-paced media environment, with proven proactive and reactive media handling abilities.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience in managing high-profile media events in the UK or international contexts.
- Experience in overseeing social media channels for individuals or organizations.
