The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) is seeking skilled Communications Officers to contribute to its mission of fostering business investment and growth in the UK, while also advocating for workers' rights and delivering on commitments to the workforce.
Our work encompasses a broad spectrum of both domestic and international matters, including the promotion of the UK’s trade agreements globally, assisting entrepreneurs in their ventures, and managing significant media issues such as the Post Office Horizon IT scandal.
The roles are diverse and demanding, ensuring that no two days are alike. Responsibilities may include creating impactful press materials, coordinating ministerial engagements, and briefing journalists on developing news stories, placing you at the heart of government communications.
Role Responsibilities
As a member of the DBT Communications team, you will engage in strategic communication initiatives to showcase the UK as a prime location for investment, advocate for workers' rights, and manage responses to challenging press inquiries from major publications.
You will have the opportunity to provide guidance to a new ministerial team regarding media engagements and will be tasked with identifying opportunities for positive media coverage and human-interest narratives from across the UK, aiming to secure favorable stories in consumer and regional media outlets.

The ideal candidates will be expected to:
- Collaborate with a team to strategize and execute communications that resonate both domestically and internationally during ministerial events, including visits and speaking engagements.
- Effectively manage reactive inquiries and rebuttals, including briefing senior journalists to influence upcoming news narratives.
- Create high-quality content for social media platforms for departmental ministers and corporate channels.
- Assist with significant announcements and general operations of the Communications team, including participation in an on-call duty schedule, for which additional compensation will be provided.
- Monitor and assess media coverage to ensure that objectives are met and that key messages are effectively communicated to target audiences.
Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications
- Demonstrated news awareness, sound judgment, political insight, and exceptional communication skills.
- Outstanding written English and experience in producing high-quality media content under tight deadlines across various platforms.
- Experience in a fast-paced media environment, showcasing effective proactive and reactive media handling capabilities.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience in orchestrating high-profile media events in the UK or international settings.
- Experience managing social media channels for individuals or organizations.
