The London Assembly plays a crucial role in overseeing the Mayor's actions by scrutinizing decisions and addressing significant issues impacting London. Comprising 25 elected Assembly Members, the Assembly operates every four years alongside the Mayor's election. The Secretariat provides essential support to facilitate the Assembly's operations, while the Communications Team promotes its work through various channels.

About the Role

This position offers a unique opportunity to serve as the Research and Policy Manager for the Conservative Members of the London Assembly. The role focuses on delivering research and policy assistance to the Members, alongside managing the associated staffing team. Collaborating closely with the Head of Office, this role is vital in aiding Assembly Members with their responsibilities and ensuring accountability for the Mayor of London.

You will oversee the delivery of research, policy briefings, reports, and advice to Assembly Members, while also developing and executing comprehensive outreach and communication strategies. Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills are essential, along with a background in relevant policy areas and management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day management and leadership for the Senior Researchers within the team.
  • Lead the production and dissemination of reports reflecting the priorities of elected Members in major policy areas.
  • Develop and implement effective outreach and communication strategies for assigned Assembly Members, coordinating closely with communications and research colleagues.
  • Ensure that elected Members receive high-quality research services and policy support, liaising with external organizations to facilitate information exchange.
  • Act as a point of escalation for GLA officers regarding scrutiny activities related to Group Members, ensuring effective communication of views and suggestions.
  • Assist the Head of Office in leading the wider team, providing problem-solving capabilities and support for team delivery.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Extensive experience in a similar role within a political or high-profile environment, adept at resolving complex issues and liaising with external bodies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team to ensure effective implementation of policies and strategies.
  • Proven capability to produce clear and concise reports and research on complex issues for diverse audiences.
  • Experience in policy briefing within a political or public sector organization, with strong research skills and the ability to synthesize information from various sources.
  • Comprehensive understanding of current policy issues affecting London and the legislative framework governing the GLA.
