London, Greater London, United Kingdom Chemonics Full time

Overview

The Cross-border Conflict Evidence, Policy and Trends research programme unites leading experts and local scholars to investigate conflict-affected border regions, exploring the connections between conflicts and the factors influencing both violent and peaceful behaviors. Supported by UK International Development, this initiative provides rigorous and actionable research aimed at informing policies and programs that foster peace.

Position Summary

We are seeking a seasoned research grants manager to oversee, delegate, and implement research awards associated with the XCEPT Research Fund (XRF), the funding mechanism for this conflict research initiative. The XRF serves as a versatile commissioning platform, offering grantees the chance to conduct in-depth research on key themes, extend the program's influence into new areas, respond to urgent crises with timely research, experiment with innovative technologies, and support researchers from the Global South. The Fund provides a variety of awards, ranging from substantial grants of £500,000 or more for multi-year research portfolios to mid-level awards of £150,000-250,000 focused on specific themes, and smaller grants of up to £50,000 for rapid evidence reviews or limited fieldwork projects.

Key Responsibilities

Award Lifecycle Management

  • Facilitate the entire lifecycle of awards, encompassing design, solicitation, selection, implementation, monitoring, uptake, and closure, ensuring adherence to the Research Fund Manual and relevant regulations.

Grant Management and Improvement

  • Collaborate closely with the Research Fund & Uptake Director, serving as a resource for all aspects of developing and managing research commissioning and grant processes.
  • Oversee procedures related to grant solicitation, selection, due diligence assessments, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation, ensuring compliance with established policies.
  • Organize and lead Fund meetings, preparing agendas and documenting discussions as necessary.

Financial Oversight

  • Manage the financial components of proposals and awarded grants, reviewing budget estimates for appropriateness and consistency.
  • Assist in regular budget forecasting and support the leadership team in program budgeting as needed.

Research Commissioning

  • Assist in commissioning new projects that align with strategic objectives, including developing ideas and drafting terms of reference.
  • Supervise and mentor research managers, providing guidance on risk, finance, and compliance.
  • Coordinate with research managers and communications teams to create materials and manage editorial processes for proposals and research dissemination.

Capacity Building

  • Support the development and implementation of a capacity-building strategy for grantees, including training and mentoring initiatives.
  • Help establish a community of practice to encourage international research collaboration.

Leadership and Representation

  • Promote the organization by attending external events and networking with stakeholders, effectively representing its values and identifying new opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant administrative or professional experience.
  • Proven experience in managing research funding or grant processes is essential.
  • Familiarity with due diligence assessments and financial review processes is advantageous.
  • Experience with FCDO-funded programs is a plus.
  • Strong written communication skills, particularly for policy and programmatic audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask with attention to detail and effective time management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
  • Willingness to travel as required.

Additional Information

  • Right to work in the UK or ability to obtain it is required.
