About the Role

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is seeking a Programme Director to lead the Policy Research Programme, driving the translation of evidence into policy and practice in the health and care sectors.

The successful candidate will oversee the NIHR policy research portfolio, including Policy Research Units, the Call-off Analytical Facility, and Evidence Review Facilities. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with the Department of Health and Social Care, NIHR Scientific Director, and senior representatives to review and enhance the Policy Research Programme.
  • Supporting the development of the NIHR PRP strategy, ensuring alignment with broader NIHR objectives.
  • Maintaining oversight of the PRP portfolio, ensuring policy relevance, academic direction, and alignment with DHSC priorities.
  • Managing complex relationships with contract holders and stakeholders.
  • Providing strategic advice and exploring opportunities to expand the NIHR portfolio's relevance.
  • Promoting the PRP and NIHR to address underserved policy areas.
  • Overseeing commissioning, management, and delivery of research projects, advising on operational improvements.
  • Enhancing the profile and impact of NIHR PRP through engagement.
  • Expanding the pool of research suppliers and resources.
  • Developing and overseeing PRP's research prioritisation processes.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience in evidence-informed policy making, ideally through commissioning and translating evidence into government policy. They will possess strong knowledge of the UK health and care policy landscape, leadership in complex, multi-stakeholder programmes, and excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
